Politics. It’s been my lifelong passion. But, like many people, I postponed deep involvement in my “hobby” during my career. Now I’m retired, reenergized, and reconnected to my roots. During the late 1960s, I was a high school activist, involved in my fair share of political protests. Later, in my first semester at Rutgers University, I accepted a spot in an exciting field-study project offered to a few students in my political science class. We went to Iowa for a semester of pre-campaign prep work for a well-known Iowa Congressman. I lived with a family in Iowa and worked directly with the Congressman’s administrative assistant—who later became the senator from Iowa. The impact of that experience stayed with me throughout the decades of a business career. My interest in politics never wavered, but I became an observer with little time for participation. In retirement, I’ve come full circle.I am excited to be in the middle of the fight for the very consequential issues and challenges our country is confronting, through my volunteer work with the Wake Country North Carolina Democratic Party. My career in business has been immensely helpful as I work to connect, interview, and place hundreds of volunteers—each of whom is as passionate about the direction of our country as I am. My dad (who worked into his 80s and lived to a few months shy of 100), used to tell me, “Douglas, you’ll get some of your best education in business.” And he was right.Equally activist and businessman, he set a great example for me. I like to think he’d be proud.

Co-Chair, Volunteer Engagement TeamWake County Democratic Party Mar 2019 - PresentRaleigh, North Carolina, United StatesNorth Carolina is a swing-state battleground, and Wake County is the largest of 100 counties in North Carolina. Election results in Wake County often determine the outcome in NC, and thus, in America.Nearly every day, I, along with members of my team, interview new volunteers who step up to be engaged in the political system. My team is the “welcoming committee” but we do more than that. We want to learn about each volunteer’s journey to activism and what motivated them to step up and participate in our democratic process. We discuss their skills and areas of passion and we then make sure they are connected to their local area precinct leadership (Wake County has 208 precincts). We plug volunteers with unique and in-demand major skills into key open roles at our headquarters. Those who step forward to volunteer come from all walks of life, and from the highest levels of corporations, to recent college graduates, to concerned and active retirees. Since 2019, I’ve personally interviewed over 500 new volunteers. They, along with their journeys to get into the “arena” (as Theodore Roosevelt said) inspire me.I love my role. It’s the best “job” I ever had. -
Co-FounderLast Mile Branding Sep 2017 - Jan 2023Greater New York City AreaSo many strategic projects have an exhaustion factor where they are never completed to their fullest potential. Do you feel that pain with your work? Years ago, when I was starting out in business, one of my first bosses use to exhort his employees all the time to: “Take it to completion!” A number of companies later, in multiple careers and leadership roles, I have never forgotten those words. Last Mile Branding was founded to provide that final stage of “perfection” when it comes to content dealing with writing excellence (most often as it relates to personal branding) for executives, entrepreneurs, personal brand strategists, or career industry writers and coaches—for their client work or for themselves. We review bios, profiles, web copy, presentations, executive resumes, portfolios, reports—whatever—to make your “last mile” less stressful, more productive, and actually fun. Your last-mile partner is Deb Dib, a Master Personal Brand Strategist and long-time leader in the careers industry, recognized for her skill making people come alive on paper.Just give us your close-to-final draft in what you feel is a pretty good state, and then—working with you live via phone and screen share—we take it to great. You end the call with a close-to-polished piece, ready for your final review and proofing. Once you no longer have to sweat the small stuff, you can:• reclaim billable hours• level-up your brand writing skills• deliver awesome copy back to your clients• and have more fun!Fast. Fun. Done! -
