About Douglas Cogan

Doug Cogan has devoted his career to serving investors and corporations who wish to integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors in their strategic planning, investment and technology decisions. He has advised state and municipal pension plans, corporations, foundations and endowments, investment consultants and high net worth investors on adoption of ESG, low-carbon and impact investment strategies. Doug is currently employed as an Energy Circuit Rider for Clean Energy New Hampshire. He serves 15 towns and school districts in Sullivan County to help them obtain grant funding for clean energy and weatherization projects that save money and fight climate change.Starting in 2018, Doug led a consulting practice at Cogan Climate Strategies, LLC, which specializes in "investing beyond carbon" -- ways that investors, companies and communities can allocate their assets to speed the transition to a low-carbon economy. The Ceres coalition published his latest report in October 2020 that provides a framework for climate scenario planning in the auto sector that is consistent with recommendations of the Taskforce for Climate-related Financial Disclosure (TCFD). Doug began his career with the Investor Responsibility Research Center (IRRC) in 1982 and has held lead research and client-facing positions at Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS), MSCI Inc. and Aperio Group LLC. He is the author of several books and dozens of major reports. His 1992 book, "The Greenhouse Gambit," was one of the first to examine how climate change would influence future business and investment decisions. In 2003 – 2010, he wrote a series of in-depth reports for Ceres and the Investment Network on Climate Risk on Corporate Governance and Climate Change.

    Doug began his career at the Investor Responsibility Research Center, the first US research provider on ESG issues and related shareholder activity. He helped establish its Environmental Information Service in 1988 and served as deputy director of the IRRC's Social Issues Service from 1994 - 2005. He was also director of IRRC's Tobacco Information Service from 1998 - 2002. ISS acquired IRRC in August 2005. In addition to writing scores of articles and hundred of proxy issue reports for IRRC and ISS clients, Doug produced commissioned research for the Rockefeller Foundation, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Ceres and the Investor Network on Climate Risk, the Carbon Disclosure Project (now CDP) and the California State Teachers' Retirement System. He also testified before Congress in 2002 addressing the Clean Air Act, and before trustees of the California Public Employees' Retirement System in 2000 addressing tobacco divestment.
