Since January, 2017, I co-launched and serve as the founding CEO and Executive Chair of Orange County Music and Dance, a nonprofit community performing arts school in Irvine, California. From 2008 until my "retirement" at the end of 2016, I served as Executive Vice President and Director of Consulting for First Foundation Bank. For approximately 18 months, I also served as Director of Trust Services. For most of my tenure at First Foundation, I provided strategic planning and organizational management advice for business, public charities, private foundation, and family clients. From 1970 until 2008, I practiced as a tax attorney. In 1976, I co-founded the Los Angeles based law firm that became known as Freeman, Freeman & Smiley, LLP. From 2005 through 2008, I was recognized by Worth magazine as among the 100 top attorneys in the United States. In 1999, I was featured by Bloomberg Financial as one of the nation’s leading estate planning attorneys. In 1981, I began a five year effort to establish a day to honor and recognize individuals, families, and businesses for their generosity of time, talent and treasure. In 1986, this effort culminated in the creation of National Philanthropy Day, passed by Congress and signed by President Ronald Reagan. I currently serve as a board member of three private foundations, two of which I am Chair and CEO. I have served as board member on a dozen public charities, and as chairman of several. I am Life Director of both the California Institute of the Arts and Orange County’s Pacific Symphony. I was also Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the University of California, Irvine Foundation and later chaired its successful $1 billion capital campaign. For several years, I served as Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law, where I taught a course entitled Organization, Management and Tax Aspects of Public Charities and Private Foundations.
