Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) is the largest school district in Indianapolis. IPS serves close to 30,000 students daily and is comprised of 71 schools. During my time with IPS I taught inclusion biology, honors biology, and AP biology to a diverse group of youth learners at Arsenal Technical High School. At Arsenal Tech I was able to inspire students to explore the nuances of biology by prioritizing an inviting, exciting, and creative classroom environment.In my third year at Arsenal Tech, I designed and implemented the “4-3-2-1 Model”, a novel instructional strategy that I used to "flip" my classroom. The "4-3-2-1 Model" helps students learn to use web applications, distill important information from different forms of media, and take control of their own learning. Most importantly, the integrated feedback loop built into the "4-3-2-1 Model" allows the classroom teacher to lead class based on student questions, curiosities, and interests. The "4-3-2-1 Model" was recognized by the University of Notre Dame Institute for Educational Initiatives and presented as a webinar to educators from 19 affiliated public high schools.
