I suck at golf! It is the one of the reasons I keep my day job. However, I am always trying to improve my game no matter how frustrating the sport truly is. I have learned a couple of important things about myself while walking through the woods looking for my golf balls over the years.• Every experience is a learning opportunity. The best learning is done when there is a desire to change.• No matter how much I want to improve, it will only happen through hard work. Watching videos is a start, but you have to get out and perform to make a difference.• Playing alone is no fun. Having great partners that are equal or better than you will push you to improve more than anything else. I love being a great partner.I see a similar thread running through my career over the years. I am constantly looking for ways to improve myself or the projects and companies I am involved with. I am not satisfied with the status quo. Whether it involves finding a gap in a market and building a new product or service to fill it or optimizing software or business processes to improve the customer experience, I am not comfortable watching people struggle to do business with me.I am a huge proponent of agile and lean methodologies. It is more important to “fail fast” than it is to go through long design and evaluation sessions only to realize that you have wasted valuable time and resources on an approach that doesn’t meet the customer’s needs. Engaging with customers early and often and adjusting your plans accordingly is much more satisfying than apologizing for missing deadlines with cost overruns and delivering projects that don’t amaze and delight the customers.I love to work with people that wake up every day excited to solve problems. My job is to facilitate that attitude and remove the obstacles that cause people to give up and just focus on getting by. I feel like I am the guy with broom on the Olympic Curling team – cleaning the ice to help the team score. I like to build a collaborative culture that doesn’t get paralyzed in over thinking problems or fear of making the wrong decisions. I value guard rails over barricades.The word “impossible” is not acceptable. A better phrase is “not at the moment, but let me think about it”.
