• Took a leadership role on an initiative to rapidly deliver the top-priority components necessary for React implementation of the company’s next-generation Design System to support a significant migration of legacy code to React. I was ultimately successful in helping to provide more components than planned on time while mentoring engineers from different teams throughout the company on practical approaches to planning, building, and maintaining complex design systems in the face of rapid change.• Standardized the use of Storybook as a development and automated testing tool in addition to its classic use as a documentation tool. This approach expanded the number of rendering states captured by an order of magnitude and significantly increased the number of visual and functional regressions identified by unit, integration, and visual regression testing tools before release.Took the lead on formalizing patterns and practices for building React components within the implementation of the design system that ensured the consistent implementation and use of components produced for use across the organization.• Collaborated with the user experience department on design system development lifecycles and contribution models to align designers and engineers on the steps necessary to ensure consistent, predictable delivery of components to engineering teams to create product functionality.

• Joined the Frontend Architecture Strategy team established by PagerDuty’s Chief Architect as a founding member and contributed to building a 5-year plan for frontend engineering at the company. My initial work focused on establishing baseline architectures and patterns for the company’s design system and increasing collaboration between engineering and user experience organizations.• Architected a system to transition the primary data store for a service suffering from occasional reliability issues from Elasticsearch to MySQL with zero downtime. I accomplished this through a shadow traffic routing mechanism that sampled data fetching from both stores and provided metrics around accuracy and performance while slowly transitioning reads. This migration resulted in over $100,000/year in cost reductions while significantly reducing the complexity and operational overhead of the service.• Led the customer-facing architecture of an initiative to expand PagerDuty’s licensing system from account-based plans to user-based seat licenses. This effort allowed the company to grow customer adoption and revenue by providing different price points for user personas that needed different subsets of functionality.• Spearheaded migrating a section of the PagerDuty web application from legacy frontend frameworks to React while mentoring teammates on React development practices and architecture. This work allowed for earlier delivery of the expanded user license management experience.

Having gained professional working experience at WebLinc, I was presented the opportunity to transition into consulting full time. For over a decade I learned to supplement my software engineering experience with the skills necessary to run my own business and manage customer relationships. In that time I provided software and infrastructure solutions to a wide array of industries such as auto insurance, pharma, education, and e-commerce while also building my own business ventures.

Once I had gained additional experience managing more responsibility for individual client projects, I was promoted to a senior position and given a leadership role on a team spearheading the re-implementation of that platform onto C# .NET. The primary focus of this project was to significantly increase the reliability and performance of client implementations on a more stable codebase and push the offering in the direction of a software platform to be sold or licensed as opposed to customized on a per-client basis. Ultimately, the .NET implementation of the e-commerce platform was faster and more reliable, produced fewer errors, and had less downtime than the previous system.

After completing my internship, I took a full-time position and began working on the first version of WebLinc's Workarea e-commerce platform. During this time, I worked closely with the senior engineers to implement and deliver an initial offering to Freepeople, an Urban Outfitters brand. Upon the success of this project, I took on increasing responsibilities for implementing and adapting the platform for a growing list of clients as WebLinc shifted its focus to the e-commerce space.

After leaving my first food service job in high school, I walked up the street to the only tech company I knew of in my small town, where I boldly told them I could improve their website. This gambit worked; I was hired and spent the rest of the summer re-developing the company's website from a statically managed Microsoft Front-page website to a dynamic ASP product catalog backed by a Microsoft Access database that the sales team could easily update.
