About Adam Urwick
I am an ambitious and passionate research assistant at RAND Europe aspiring to change the energy landscape. As a postgraduate researcher at Sheffield University, I worked towards improving our understanding and performance of hybrid perovskite solar cells, which have the potential to revolutionize the renewable energy sector. I have over five years of experience in conducting cutting-edge research in this field, using various spectroscopic and scattering techniques. Besides my PhD I hold a first class MEng in Materials Science & Engineering. Having achieved my academic aspirations I am now keen to move to the other end of the technological pipeline; from research and innovation to policy, deployment, and commercialisation. In addition to my academic research, I have also applied my skills and knowledge in different contexts, such as working as a project research officer at the Government Office for Science, where I reviewed the role and function of science advisory councils, and as an intern at ILIKA plc, where I investigated thin film shape memory alloys. I have experience in teaching, through my role supervising master's students as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, and as a freelance mentor of university students. I have published three papers to date, and also recently written on various topics that interest me on my Medium page. I have a strong belief in the importance of positive social impact, influenced by my involvement in the Effective Altruism movement and other causes. This belief has motivated me to pursue a career where I can leverage my skills and knowledge to have the greatest positive impact.

Masters Student
Masters Dissertation: "Towards Novel Thermoelectric Materials for Energy Harvesting Applications". I investigated the potential of tetragonal tungsten bronzes as thermoelectric materials for energy harvesting. I used solid state synthesis methods such as milling, calcination and sintering to prepare ceramic pellets for characterisation of thermoelectric.
Student Ambassador
Student Intern
Designed, developed, and constructed a device for temperature dependent structural measurements of thin film alloy samples in x-ray diffractometry. Used said device to perform structural characterisation of alloy compositions as a function of temperature, identifying phases and crystal systems. Research and experiments done as part of the Self-Healing.
Postdoctoral Research Assistant
As a research assistant it was my role in the team to prepare pellet Pyrochlore samples (used in solid oxide fuels cells and capacitors) for impedance spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction from constituent elements using processes ranging from ball milling to sieving, pressing and sintering. I also acquired and assembled impedance data for analysis by.
