As an associate pathologist, I evaluated glass and digitized histopathology slides and generated reports for surgical biopsy specimens consisting of predominantly oral and maxillofacial specimens. When examining cases, I correlated the histopathologic findings with the submitted case information, regularly evaluating dental radiographs, CT/CBCT findings, and clinical images. I recommended and interpreted ancillary testing when pertinent. For complex mandibulectomy and maxillectomy specimens, I conducted gross evaluation, sectioning, and margin evaluation. I communicated case results to the submitting clinician, often veterinary dentists, and provided additional consultation to referring veterinarians and veterinary oncologists as needed. Apart from my diagnostic cases, I collaborated with co-investigators on multiple projects investigating oral neoplasms and a project assessing the feasibility of Mohs micrographic surgery in veterinary oral surgery practice. As an anatomic pathology resident, I evaluated biopsies and performed autopsies/necropsies. I worked on the surgical biopsy service, a high-volume, fast-paced service with 40-60 biopsies per day, as well as specialty services including the dermatopathology service, ocular pathology service, and Comparative Pathology Core. I served as the primary ocular pathology resident and was responsible for grossly evaluating and trimming ocular specimens and preparing reports for over 200 cases over the course of my residency. Beyond my diagnostic service, I gave interdepartmental seminars sharing my expertise in oral pathology and ocular pathology and presented diagnostic cases and original research at multiple regional and national conferences. I served on committees to recruit/interview residency candidates and review/update residency training materials, and wrote an SOP to facilitate the transition from in person to virtual rounds during the COVID-19 pandemic. I also taught and evaluated veterinary students on diagnostic pathology rotations and in laboratory, classroom, and virtual settings.

I participated in slide read-outs and proof-read reports, advancing my knowledge of ocular pathology.

As a veterinary services assistant, I performed daily rounds observing the colony primates (primarily rhesus macaques and cynomolgus macaques) documenting findings in written SOAPs and presenting cases to staff veterinarians. I managed spontaneous diseases and monitored induced disease states. In collaboration with veterinary pathologists, I performed necropsies and presented a case report of gastric adenocarcinoma in a rhesus macaque at a regional conference.

As a necropsy assistant, I collected samples for histopathologic evaluation and bacteriologic and molecular testing from necropsy specimens and documented gross necropsy. I performed gross sectioning of formalin-fixed tissues, microtome sectioning paraffin-embedded tissue samples, and staining of slides for histologic analysis, including special histochemical stains. During the annual hunting season, I conducted molecular testing on field samples for the Wisconsin DNR Chronic Wasting Disease (CDW) surveillance program. I also collaborated with veterinary pathologists and microbiologists to publish a case report of Corynebacterium mustelae endocarditis in a dog in the Journal of Comparative Pathology.

I performed a cross over study analyzing the efficacy of a feed additive in 24 weaned Brangus calves, engaged in University of Florida Extension programs designed to teach community youth about agriculture, and assisted with the day-to-day activities of a 1200 head cow-calf operation.

Akkina Virology LabI performed cell culture, maintained viral stocks, grew bacteria for transfection and plasmid preparation, assisted with the upkeep of a humanized mouse colony, aided in sample collection, and performed common molecular analyses (e.g., PCR, flow cytometry, ELISAs).

Engle Animal Nutrition LabI performed proximate analyses such as methylation, beta-endorphin extraction, LECO, and Folch. I assisted with the collection of data though dissection, homogenization, liver biopsies, and blood, urine, and fecal collection. I worked cattle associated with the feedlot and range cattle centers, and cared for fistulated steers. I updated necessary paperwork for the lab such as training records, hazardous waste records, and inventories.
