Since leaving school at 16, my career has taken me from engineering fitter/machinist to PhD researcher.I’m equally as passionate about academia as I am about hands-on problem solving, which made me a very good fit for Dext.I’m a time-served apprentice machinist, advanced fitter and welder, specialising in mass production and Ministry of Defence naval pump applications. I contributed to the manufacture and testing of pumps for the UK’s newly commissioned nuclear submarine fleet in the early 2000s.I went on to gain a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and complete a PhD titled: Experimental and Theoretical Analysis of Heat Pump Performance for Retrofitted Domestic Installations’. While completing my PhD I also taught full time at Sheffield Hallam University. Now, I’m responsible for the complex science and tech calculations that ensure Dext products meet their potential.

Thesis Overview: The thesis described the investigation of the installation of an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) retrofitted into a 1930’s semi-detached dwelling. With the current focus on the reduction of (CO2) emissions ASHP’s stand out as a low cost, low carbon, high efficiency primary heat source well suited to the United Kingdom (UK) climate, which can be retrofitted to replace conventional gas boilers in existing housing stock. The work has served to address the need to investigate retrofitted ASHP performance by using consistent and systematic methods to accurately reflect the complex, implicit relationship between: The local environment, the fabric of the dwelling, the heat delivery system, the heat supply, demand dynamics and overall system performance. The experimental measurement of the external environment, internal environment, heat delivery system and AHSP system was made by the means of an on-line remote performance monitoring data acquisition system with a comprehensive range of transducer and telemetry devices. The harvested results were used to gain a wider understanding of how the heat pump system was behaving when installed into an existing building and processed to produce a series of performance indicating results. The experimental measurements resulted in the development and validation of a computational multi-zonal building simulation and coupled ASHP model utilising the MATLAB and Simulink programming environment. The computational model was designed to accurately represent the operation of the heat pump, heat distribution system, fabric of the building, and external environment creating an integrated overall system model able to predict the dynamics of heat supply and demand. The resultant model was then utilised to simulate three optimisation strategies to the quality of the insulation surrounding the building envelope.

I was employed by Sheffield Hallam University as a consultant to DEXT Heat Recovery using the Knowledge Transfer Partnership scheme. The project aimed to investigate the feasibility of the duct heat recovery concept (code named ‘Apollo’) and find pathways to bring the project forward. The problem was found to be computationally complex and was only just possible with the hardware of the time.I performed a number of feasibility studies to identify a physical design pathway for the core technology, mainly on the Ansys platform. The iterative design process enabled only the optimum designs to be considered for future prototyping and manufacture. The outcome of the research built the foundations of the process that led to the UKRI funded R&D program named 'Advanced heat recovery systems for the food manufacturing industry'.
