I grew up in the quiet fishing town of Buckhaven, Scotland, where I was often the observer rather than diving headfirst into things. Academically, I struggled at first, but everything clicked once I discovered my love for science—particularly physics and chemistry—in high school. This newfound passion led me to pursue a master’s degree in chemistry at the University of St Andrews, and eventually, a PhD in chemistry from the University of Bath.Moving to Bath was a huge step for a boy from a small town, as I now found myself living 8-10 hours away from home. It was a life-changing experience, one that I cherish deeply. During my time at St Andrews, I met my wife, Azaria. After she completed her degree, she moved to Wiltshire so we could live together, and we later married in a small ceremony with our closest friends and family. Shortly after, we welcomed our daughter, Ailsa, into the world.After a year in Wiltshire, we decided to move back to Fife to be closer to family. It was the right choice, and we have since settled into our first home, expanding our family with the birth of our son, August James.Sports have always been a big part of my life, from playing football with friends to rugby for both school and the local club. I’ve always valued staying active, whether it was through the gym or boxing at university. However, after university, physical activity took a back seat as I focused on work and family.That all changed during the COVID-19 pandemic when I realized I wanted to show my kids the importance of staying active. I decided to try strongman training after nearly a decade away from the gym, and I quickly fell in love with the sport. Competing in the under-80kg category, I achieved 2nd place in Scotland and qualified for Britain’s Strongest Man 2024 in my division.It’s been an incredible journey, from my small-town beginnings to my academic and personal life which I am now looking to use my love for learning and curiosity about the work to drive my career and family forward and I’m excited to see what the future holds!

However, the journey came with unexpected challenges, notably the crude oil price crash at the time. This led many oil and gas companies to put new material exploration on hold, which initially affected the market for the testing services we had been developing.In response, we shifted ARTIS's focus, pivoting away from a dependency on oil and gas toward becoming industry leaders in rubber recycling and testing. I started in the QA laboratory, where I gained a foundational understanding of the materials SPC specialized in, but it wasn’t long before I transitioned into the role of Lead Development Chemist for all high-performance and specialty elastomers across SPC's operations in the UK and Spain.In this role, I worked closely with both clients and suppliers to create new products and formulations that met specific client needs. It was an exciting challenge, blending technical expertise with problem-solving and innovation. Additionally, I took on the responsibility of developing SPC's high-performance production facility, transforming what had once been a lesser focus into a thriving and vital component of SPC's business strategy and growth.While the position was incredibly fulfilling, after two years, the demands of the role became difficult to balance with my growing family.
