A dual role managing the silicones products at the Cornelius Specialties manufacturing site in Haverhill and working with the Strategic Initiatives Team at Cornelius Group headquarters in Bishops Stortford.

This is a collaborative project between The OU and Cornelius Specialties to develop silicon containing materials for the contact lens market. These PDMS based materials are also widely used in other markets such as coatings and personal care.

Supervised by Dr Jason Lynam, this was a synthetic project with an emphasis on mechanistic understanding. I studied the reaction of terminal alkynes with ruthenium and rhodium precursors to form novel unsaturated organometallic species. It was found that the use of ancillary acetate ligands enabled the isolation of vinylidene complexes inaccessible from traditional precursors. They were also found to be capable of stabilising potential reaction intermediates. It is hoped that this fundamental understanding will aid future developments in catalysis and synthetic methodologies.

During my MChem I spent a year at GSK and worked in the Respiratory CEDD’s scale up group. This not only provided an excellent training in synthetic organic chemistry but also an understanding of the industrial environment.
