About Dr. Adam Pollard

Into the maths of well-being and the environment especially joining sustainability with fitness and preventative medicine, for example tracking the impact of the sit-up on the hospital discharge lounge. I was chuffed to be the only mathematician invited to the 43-strong Workshop on Environmental Sustainability and Clinical Care held at Yale in 2018 where my work was cited a number of times.I'm the Founder and Director of Numeration Systems, an Applied Mathematician with experience drawn across the physical sciences and public health. Thriving on solution design when faced with a blank page, I can see the bigger picture, bringing diverse multi-sector technical knowledge and internationally recognised expertise to address complex challenges. I particularly enjoy collaborative approaches that navigate operational landscapes to build networks that drive results. My specialisms:Machine Learning | Big Data | Health and Care | Well-being | Sustainability | Finance | Hydrogeology | Pollutant modelling | Computational Statistics | Graphical Models | Applied Mathematics | Programme Delivery | Leadership | Multi-disciplinary Collaboration | Team Management and Engagement | Goal Setting | Performance Monitoring | Data RepresentationHighlights and what I can do:- Identify gaps for exploitation and growth using primary research, partnership development fostering opportunities for social inclusion- Lead Senior Scientists and Engineers by creating structures, systems and collaborative culture- Publish in international journals, e.g. British Journal of Cancer and Environmental Science and Technology- Present e.g. to the King’s Fund, Climate Change and Extreme Events Board of Public Health England and Yale University- Attract grant funding investment to develop peer-reviewed data-systems for health and well-being - Deliver solution architecture, using disparate health datasets to predict the in-hospital onset of avoidable harms such as Acute Kidney Injury and sepsis, delivering real benefits to patients alongside financial savings - Innovate through viewing things differently, turning challenges into opportunities to overcome

  • Numeration Systems Ltd
    Research Director
Numeration Systems Ltd Aug 2013 - Present
    Truro, England, United Kingdom
Pioneered niche mathematical architecture around Big Data environments that identified multiple ways of working in health organisations. This resulted in making costs efficiencies, improved outcomes for users and also resulted in a reduced carbon footprint of up to 50%Lead Big Data projects which included vision of product, delivery and implementation of a data held across a large acute hospital ranging from biometric to information which reflected corporate performance Developed and built a web-based platform with which the benefit of preventative medicine to the NHS could reduce GP appointments, downstream service demand and produce health outcome. This resulted in improving operational efficiency Recruited, supervised and mentored research teams from across the academic-commercial interface. Led successful collaborations with social enterprises and delivered proof of concept to improve mental health. This resulted in publication, delivery of software and measurement of the marginal benefit to physical and mental well-beingDesigned, populated and implemented the Pollard Model architecture underpinning clinical layout in UK hospitalsWrote strategic plans to migrate the peer-reviewed Pollard Model for license across healthcare systems informing strategic reconfiguration and carbon reduction. Acquired venture capitalist investment and grant funding to £500,000Spearheaded funding bid from British Gas Energy Trust to roll out telemetry that helped vulnerable people stay well in their own homes for longer, resulted in research publication in the European Journal of Public HealthGuided ratification of model architecture through authoring publication in Environment Science and TechnologyActively engaged and collaborated with international research communities via publications, open-source software and participated in technical conferences, workshops. This included Yale, King’s Fund and Public Health England.

Building simulations and analyses using detailed understanding of NHS informatics. Redrew technical and mathematical modelling solutions for NHS workforce assignmentLed Big Data projects, combining the full range of data held across a large acute hospital ranging from biometric to information reflecting corporate performance Researched and sourced information that populated bespoke designed algorithm that linked staff welfare, operational stability and patient outcomes through using Big-Data from disparate sources Researched, designed and constructed a constraints analysis to inform local NHS response to COVID-19 Inspired and engaged cross-functional teams, connecting mathematical and statistical theory with the delivery of information for human resource planning among Trust-wide collaborators, ensuring calibration of products developed Headed detailed negotiations with third parties in designing research, offering mathematical advice to contractorsFostered a management culture based on valuing colleagues, grounded in equity and deliverabilityDrove change in recruitment and selection procedures to ensure equality of access for all candidates. Now working to influence change at local and national level in collaboration with national HR Director Championed diversity and inclusion by acting as the disability expert on the Trust’s improvement plansDesigned surveys and solution methods with which the Trust can statistically test and demonstrate equality of access to services and equal opportunities for employees Wrote grant applications worth up to £2.5M and compiled linked budgets.Led funding bid to use table tennis to foster social inclusion for people with mild learning disabilities. Examined the variation in attitudes to sepsis education among different NHS staff
  • European Centre For The Environment And Human Health
    Research Fellow
European Centre For The Environment And Human Health Feb 2011 - Sep 2013
    Truro, England, United Kingdom
At the European Centre for Environment & Human Health provided mathematical insight to research programmes.Invited to apply and won Fellowship on the strength of the ground-breaking carbon modelling project, Pollard Model, which models the ‘triple bottom line’ of carbon, cost, & patient outcomes in healthcare.Cultivated research in sustainable and cost-efficient healthcare and built developed new areas of working around inequality and human health; air pollution; and radon and cancer. Published work in high-ranking journals and invited to present research to a number of audiences including the King’s Fund and the Climate Change and Extreme Events Board of Public Health EnglandManaged conflicting projects and multi-stakeholder engagement. Worked in an interdisciplinary research environment with epidemiologists, economists and geographers on multiple projects, including national pilot of the Pollard Model. See www.numeration.co.uk Assembled multi-sector collaborations, leveraging commercial acumen to build strategic partnerships and building a powerful network of professional connections and contributors, resulting in over 60 academic outputs to present dayEngaged partners and external organisations through strategy, direction and delivery.
