Dr. Anita Long brings her years of expertise as a math educator to special projects within the GEARUP program at VSAC, specifically bringing the course Essential Math for College and Careers to Vermont schools. This work includes building a consortium of high school and college math educators, curating a curriculum that embraces NCTM’s best practices for teachers and students, and running a week-long workshop for teachers preparing to teach the course. This year, Anita has worked with VTVLC and colleagues to provide this course on line for students anywhere in Vermont.EMC2 provides students an opportunity to engage with foundational math concepts from Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Units are intertwined using formative lessons to promote discussion and discovery. Students who have completed this course say they feel more confident in math moving forward.Anita has taught math to students from kindergarten through college and beyond. She has provided professional development and mentoring to elementary teachers of mathematics in grades K-4 and pre-service instruction to teachers k-12. Using these skills along with her administrative and communication skills she hopes to help shape math education and support for students building STEM skills for post-secondary opportunities.

Working with students, teachers, and parents to improve mathematics education and learning with a focus on student inclusion. Math is learned in many different ways and at the Stern Center we work to match your preferred learning environment with the content you need to understand.

Putney

Taught mathematics courses ranging from developmental math courses to Linear Algebra. Offered a Independent Study in Chem Engineering (Transport Phenomenon).Research in mathematics education specializing in access for students from traditionally underrepresented groups in STEM.Served the college on several different committees including Restructuring Task Force, Transfer Credit Task Force, and Mac Platform for computers Task Force.

Oversaw the peer-tutoring program available to all UVM students and faculty. Program provided one-one peer coaching of study skills, classroom presentations, presentations during Orientation and Admitted Student Visits. Taught a three-credit course, EDSS 55: Tutoring: Theory and Practice each semester.

Duties included advising a caseload of approximately 125 students; plan and schedule 30 math courses in the Burlington site each semester; hire, train, supervise and support 22 math teachers in the Burlington site. Also served as ADA coordinator for approximately 20 students from June, 2004 – December, 2005.

Responsible for creating a program for high school students who are low-income, potential first generation to college and interested in math and science. Responsibilities include administering a $200,000/yr federal grant; hiring, training, and supervising two full-time employees and ten part-time employees; developing curriculum for six week summer residential program and for monthly Saturday workshops.
