Dr. Brydie joined task as Systems Analyst and Software Developer for the Statistical Collection and Reporting System (SCRS), which was tasked by the Science Operations Office at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center with the purpose of producing management level statistics concerning ingest, archive, production, and distribution of Earth Science data products by the EOS Core System (ECS) V0 Systems at the Distributed Active Archive Centers. Dr. Brydie’s other career highlights within this position are that he:• Re-engineered existing SCRS to improve the level of automation and overall efficiency and fault tolerance of system production activities as well as the quality of statistics produced.• Planned and structured approach to collect and report management level statistics for ECS Version 1 upgrade.• Earned merit promotion to Member of Technical Staff B.

Mr. Brydie utilized his expertise in mathematics theory and statistical methods to evaluate the the risk of lung cancer associated with diesel exhaust as could be calculated from a 14 case-control or cohort study. He successfully evaluated the findings from these studies to access whether there was sufficient evidence to implicate diesel exhaust as a human lung carcinogen. Previously, four studies found increased risks associated with long-term exposure, although two of the four studies were based on the same cohort of railroad workers. Using common criteria for determining causal associations, the epidemiologic evidence was insufficient to establish diesel engine exhaust as a human lung carcinogen.

Mr. Brydie conducted Pre-calculus and Calculus mathematics courses. He also gained experience utilizing technology in the classroom which included the TI-85 and TI-92 graphing calculators.

Mr. Brydie utilized his expertise in mathematical theory and statistical methods to produce enhanced predictive mixing zone models to simulate to dissipation and dilution of lethal acute concentrations of toxic pollutants to a spatially restricted toxic dilution zone. In addition to choosing the appropriate model, determining the limits of applicability, and establishing data needs, an expert system was developed. The Cornell Mixing-Zone Expert System (CORMIX1) was utilized as a model as it appeared to be a highly flexible tool for regulatory analysis that was adaptable to the evaluation of alternatives in engineering design.

Mr. Brydie conducted lectures and evaluated the progress of students taking developmental mathematics and statistics courses. He also, actively participated in faculty meetings.

Mr. Brydie conducted recitation classes for various mathematics and statistics courses, assisted professors with classroom activities for students, proctored quizzes and examinations, also prepared and graded homework assignments. He provided assistance to first generation college students and handicapped students at all levels of undergraduate mathematics.

Mr. Brydie conducted research as an intern related to the construction and implementation of what is now the Jefferson Lab Free-Electron Laser (FEL). The Jefferson Lab FEL is based on something called an energy recovered LINAC. A Free-Electron Laser (FEL) provides intense, powerful beams of laser light that can be tuned to a precise color or wavelength. Free-electron lasers absorb and release energy at any wavelength, because the electrons are freed of atoms. This key feature enables the FEL to be controlled more precisely than conventional lasers to produce intense powerful light in brief bursts with extreme precision. The lack of a lasing medium in the cavity allows the laser to operate at very high power levels without the usual cavity heating problems.
