BREAST-PREDICT is the first Irish Cancer Society Collaborative Cancer Research Centre, involving six academic institutions nationwide, and Cancer Trials Ireland (formerly ICORG). This research project was obtained via competitive IRC funding and involves optimising the delivery of small molecules to the eye for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Specifically it involves the formulation of our small molecule proprietary drugs into biodegradable microparticle formulations. This project involved utilising larval zebrafish drug screens to identify novel anti-angiogenic small molecules. As part of the Marie Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways program, I spent two months working for RenaSci on a drug discovery and development for novel eye therapeutics project. RenaSci is a pharmaceutical CRO with expertise in diabetes, obesity, psychiatric and neurological disorders, and drug abuse evaluations. This gave me the opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the pharmaceutical industry.Skills gained include: - Study design- Maintaining industry standard paperwork- Client reporting- Establishing novel rodent models of diabetes- In vitro diabetes techniques

This position followed on from my PhD project, investigating an RNAi- based suppression and replacement gene therapy for rhodopsin-linked autosomal dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa.

The optimisation of a gene therapy strategy for rhodopsin-linked autosomal dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa. Specifically using in vivo models of inherited retinopathies to evaluate an RNAi-based suppression and replacement gene therapy delivered intraocularly via adeno-associated virus.
