Dr. Kevern is a senior researcher at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory focusing on the decarbonization of the cement and concrete industry. He is an internationally recognized expert on pervious concrete, concrete durability, and non-traditional concrete applications. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Iowa State University at the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center and B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville with an environmental emphasis. He is active in ASCE, ACI, and TRB. His research focuses on reducing the mitigating the environmental footprint of human society through novel applications of cementitious materials. Much of his research aims to link challenges in the emerging and built environment in Africa with similar challenges occurring at home. Some of his current research projects include industrial scale decarbonization of cement and concrete, climate change adaptation using green infrastructure, improving water quality using cement-based filters, improving concrete lifespan using hydrophobic coatings, and development of non-destructive techniques to assess concrete curing and durability.
