About Doug Mcelroy

Dr. Douglas B. McElroyAstrophysicist, Spacecraft Operations Specialistdouglasbmcelroy@gmail.comLooking to help existing or planned spacecraft projects in the areas of Mission Operations, Mission Planning and Scheduling, or Science Planning.I bring with me a wealth of experience on high-profile successful missions, namely: Hubble Space Telescope, Cassini Mission to Saturn, and the Spitzer Space Telescope. This has given me skills in both Observatory missions and Encounter missions. One common denominator in these missions is the need for an optimized schedule that satisfies all of the mission parameters with respect to Spacecraft safety and calibration, Instrument safety and calibration, and as much quality science per unit time as possible. All of these missions have also required coordinating requirements from teams and systems to make a coherent, conflict-free spacecraft schedule. From an engineering standpoint I have been involved in:• V & V planning for new processes and procedures• Target-of-Opportunity procedures and execution• Recovery from Safe Mode• Risk mitigation planning• Presentation to management and NASA• Writing and maintaining procedures for operation• Training and mentoring new hires and transfers in system operations• Projects to increase scheduling efficiencyIn addition to being an essential team member in each of the above projects, I also have experience in managing a planning and scheduling team. In that capacity, I was in charge of:• Assignments of duties• Shift scheduling• Hiring• In one case, Firing• Performance Evaluation• Reporting/presenting to upper managementI hold a Ph.D. in astrophysics. This makes me able to relate to and understand the needs of science investigators on the project; I speak their language. I think my ability to bridge the gap between engineering and science in spacecraft missions gives me a great deal of value as an interface between the two disciplines.

Listed skills include Spectroscopy, Photometry, Unix, Pc, and 10 others.
