I’ve been privileged to focus my career on Leadership Development for several years now, with the Walmart Academy. I am so grateful to work for a company who values their people enough to invest a great deal into developing leaders, providing endless opportunities for associates, and dedicating resources to make a difference for individuals, families, communities, and our world.Through developing better leadership skills myself over the course of my career, I’ve experienced the difference they make in my life, job satisfaction, and success. I’m happier and my people are too when I lead in ways that empower them to use their unique perspective, experience, backgrounds, and skillsets to make a real difference, and then ensure that they get the credit they deserve. This approach provides organic opportunities for each of us to grow in challenging and fulfilling ways as we support one another through the growing process while focusing on achieving goals and hitting targets. The load really is easier when we share it. A critical truth: Managing is an important part of Leading but it is NOT Leadership. - Managing is transactional, so we use it with transactions such as how we use our time, budgets, resources, and assets. - Leadership is relational, and is essential whenever there is a relationship that we rely on to accomplish goals. So, if people are involved in any way, we have to be good leaders. - When we “manage” people, we are treating them like an object, instead of like a person, and we damage trust. In other words, Leadership is about Relationships and it must come first. As Stephen Covey put it, “Effective management without leadership is like straightening the deck chairs on the Titanic. No amount of management success can compensate for failure in leadership.”He also pointed out that throughout most of the 20th century, America trained managers but not leaders. What we need at every level of today’s organizations, are good leaders who can develop, motivate and inspire their people, and who can also manage.
