About Drew Danin
I have spent a lot of time educating children about the biology, ecology and conservation of our environment. In the summer of 2011 (3 months total), I worked up at Mount St. Helens with a non-profit subsidiary of the U.S. Forest Service, called the Mount St. Helens Institute. I worked with children mainly (and some adults), teaching them about the geology and biology of Mount St. Helens, as well as environmental conservation basics. I set up and implemented a Junior Ranger program and was able to learn a great deal about designing and executing an educational framework. I also guided hikes around and inside the crater of the mountain, teaching the hikers about the biology and plant-life of Mount. St. Helens. In the winter of 2012, I worked with a non-profit organization called Equilibrio Azul, in a costal town of Ecuador, researching Pacific sea turtles. I tagged, measured, and took DNA samples from nesting mothers. This data was used to study their migrational and population patterns. We were working with the Hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) – two globally endangered species. Another big part of my job in Ecuador was to work with local children, teaching them about ocean ecology and conservation. Working with children (many whom were underprivileged and unable to attend school) was the most rewarding experience I had with Equilibrio Azul. Their interest and fascination with sea turtles and oceans was extremely heart-warming. I also spent two seasons working in México on a sea turtle conservatory. We would patrol five miles of federally protected coastline looking for mother turtles that were laying eggs or nests full of eggs and would collect and incubate them: all to keep the eggs away from poachers. I learned a lot about the causes and effects of anthropogenic stress on fragile ecosystems, and different methods to mitigate these stresses.
