Here I am researching fundamental properties of organic semiconductors. This research is always done with an eye to applications, including solar cells and photodetectors.

Here I was studying the geminate and non-geminate recombination in organic solar cells. This is accomplished through the development of novel experimental techniques to probe the recombination pathways in thin film semiconductors. This work involves writing a drift-diffusion simulation to model various experimental modalities, as well as constructing and testing apparatuses. This work is ongoing and will contribute to my PhD thesis as well as future publications.

During my time as a Research Assistant I was responsible for record keeping of past postgraduate student’s research, this work collimated in a document outlining experimental procedures, sample creation, theoretical outlines for experiments, as well as a history of the samples that have been studied. My work here included responsibility for the maintenance of the laser systems and other lab equipment. Over the first year I became familiar with the operation and theory of Ti:Saph lasers, built and tested a visual optical-parametric amplifier, built a time-resolved photoluminescence apparatus, as well as supervised two summer intern students. My graduate thesis considers the effects of octahedra tilt on spin dynamics in 2 dimensional perovskite materials. This work resulted in the creation of the manuscript Detection of Rashba spin splitting in 2D organic inorganic perovskite via precessional carrier spin relaxation, as well as my Master’s thesis.

Here I was responsible for the fabrication and testing of methylammonium-halide perovskite solar cells using sequential deposition as well as single step processes. The aim of this start-up was to investigate techniques for upscaling perovskite solar cells to 25mm2 active area by the beginning of 2018. I was further responsible for the construction of an atomic layer deposition chamber used in the deposition of electron acceptor layers.

As a summer researcher with the Dalhousie Ultrafast Group I was responsible for building and testing a transient absorption spectrometer. Using a Mira HP 900, pumped with a Verdi 18W, coupled with a Reg-A 9000 regenerative amplifier, an operational transient absorption spectrometer was designed and built incorporating both transmission and reflection modes, resolved in both time and frequency space. Further; I was responsible for data analysis used in the publication “Four-Wave Mixing revels weaker many body interactions and slower dephasing in perovskite photovoltaic materials than GaAs.”
