He served as the Director of Professional Learning for the Confluence Charter Academies from 2013-2017. Confluence Charter Schools services some of the most marginalized communities in the City of St. Louis. In the summer of 2015, Jim attended an Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study workshop that changed his life! The impact helped Jim clearly defined both his personal and professional "Why." That school year marked the beginning of Confluence’ journey in becoming a trauma-informed organization. Taking a team approach, Dr. Walters quickly assembled a small group of trauma-informed social workers and along with the guidance and support of Alive and Well STL, the entire teaching staff completed trauma awareness training. Work didn’t stop there as sensory centers/safe spaces were established to better meet the needs of all students as well as incorporating yoga/mindfulness practices in the classrooms. The entire Confluence Charter Academies network (6 schools along with the central office) made a commitment to not only change the question of "What's Wrong with You?" to "What Happened to You?" Which sought out to answer the "How can we Help, or What is it that you need to be successful?" questions. Much of Jim's work involves bridging the world of mental health professionals with the practitioners in the school communities. He now consults other districts in their quest of building healthier and more resilient communities with an emphasis on adult caregiver wellness.
