Dr. Sankar acquired​ Micro-Finance Institution (MFI), Belstar in 2008 to ensure sustainability of Hand in Hand India’s pillar activities. With a double bottom line approach ​of profit and financial inclusion and running as a socially responsible MFI, Belstar works with self help group and joint liability group models by providing timely credit at affordable costs to economically weaker sectors of women. The organization operates in 8 States in India. In July 2016, Muthoot Finance Ltd provided strategic investment to Belstar. Presently, Belstar has become a systemically important NBFC MFI operating in the high-potential MFI space and promotes entrepreneurship among unbanked women in India in a profitable manner.

Dr. Sankar is the co-founder of the re-structured organization, Hand in Hand along with former ABB Chairman Dr. Percy Barnevik. She Oversees the day-to-day management and strategy for Hand in Hand India with 3,000 employees and supports poverty alleviation projects in India, South Africa, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lankha, Brazil and Afghanistan. Hand in Hand India is involved in implementing an Integrated Community Development Project for poverty reduction with five interconnected and interdependent sectors: (1) Child labour elimination and education; (2) Self Help Groups (SHGs) and microfinance for enterprise, and job creation; (3) Skill Development & Technology Centres for provision of employable skills to women, youth and farmers; (4) Medical camps and awareness campaigns to improve health levels; and (5) Environmental protection via solid waste management and natural resource management. Hand in Hand India is currently active in 17 districts in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, in the Union Territory of Puducherry, as well as 10 other states in India

Dr. Sankar was the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), assisting the Tamil Nadu Women’s Development Project (Mahalir Thittam). During the decade that she worked there, she has been involved in key policy documentation including the concept note for Tamil Nadu Empowerment and Poverty Reduction Project, which was included in World Bank’s lending programme for the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the chapter on Social Welfare for the Xth Plan of the Tamil Nadu Government. Dr. Sankar was responsible for selection of partner NGOs, preparation of MIS and monitoring the impact of the programme.
