I am the Programme Lead for the BA English and the MA Literature for Children and Young Adults at Plymouth Marjon University, where I am a Senior Lecturer. In this role, I've developed courses on environmental humanities, rethinking literary canons, and innovative research strategies. I have also supervised and mentored undergraduate and postgraduate students and participated in various academic committees and events.My research interests focus on YA fiction's impact on its readers, especially girls. I have published a monograph, Female Heroes in Young Adult Fantasy Fiction, with Bloomsbury, as well as several articles and book chapters on the subject. I am also the Founding President of the YA Studies Association, an organisation that fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and inclusivity in YA literature, media, and culture studies and practice. Through my research and leadership, I strive to promote the value of literature and the humanities in higher education and to increase accessibility and widen participation.

Specifically, I explored how the adolescent female bodies available in mythopoeic YA fantasy contest the dominant, hegemonic images of girls and women that are narrow and limiting thereby opening spaces in which bodies of difference are acceptable and in which girls might view their bodies as positive parts of their selves.
