Acting General Counsel | Secondment From Norton Rose FulbrightOoredoo Myanmar Jun 2013 - Sep 2013Yangon , Yangon , OoSecondment into Bangkok and Yangon as part of the core team involved in setting up a multi-billion dollar telecoms business in Myanmar, essentially as a telecoms start-up from scratch. This was the most intense experience in my life, involving 24/7 activity on all aspects of creating a major telecoms business in a high-pressure race to be first to commercial launch. The role involved, for example, project-managing the legal creation of the Myanmar business, the creation and implementation of key contracts, working with local counsel on tax structuring, designing and negotiating an infrastructure JV, and procuring many billions of dollars of telecoms infrastructure. I worked closely with Ooredoo's amazing team in Asia while also project-managing and co-ordinating closely with other experts. We ultimately handed over an operational business to the newly-appointed local management team in Yangon. The task was described as "the legal equivalent of rolling out a mobile network on Mount Everest". Formidable complications arose due to the nascent legal system in Myanmar at the time, requiring many creative solutions and unique work-arounds. The project won multiple awards. -
