I assist and educate clients in product and process R&D. With over a decade of original research in sensors and automation I have taught undergraduate, professional and postgraduate courses in electronics, programming, automation and robotics.Leading the Executive Committee of the Institution of Engineering and Technology for Greater Manchester we promote scientific and engineering career paths. This involves mentoring of engineers to develop the competencies for professional registration up to Chartered Engineer status and all aspects of the planning and running STEM events for our members and the public.Leaving industrial development career to complete a PhD I developed algorithms and hardware for innovative commercial projects including a cutting-edge system to remotely detected concealed guns and explosives. The system, called 'MiRTLE', underwent independent government trials and I handled the technical aspects of the technology transfer and IP to Radio Physics Solutions. I led the design for manufacture aspects for electronic systems and documentation. MiRTLE, and derivative systems, use low-noise analogue signals and digital signal processing with artificial neural networks to correctly classify threats. Subsequently, I have worked with SMEs and government agencies in developing medical equipment and industrial automation.I continue to collaborate with researchers in the fields of textiles, control and human-movement to investigate novel worn electrical muscle stimulation and control for injury recovery and enhanced mobility applications. Previous experience includes: seven years with the MoD at RAF Henlow; two years as the Senior Electronic Engineer at Lynton Lasers; two years as a Field Engineer at Saudi Telecom and Lucent Technologies. Problem-based learning is my preferred method of teaching to foster the development of skills and techniques. I have authored numerous scientific journals, presented at conferences and been involved in organising many industrial training workshops. I have competence in debugging, sensor, embedded and electronic design, and system integration and testing.I enjoy puzzles and board games.
