Profile bio

About Nate Fuller

I currently work for the US Fish and Wildlife Service where I coordinate bat survey and data collection efforts in the eastern US. Our efforts aim to improve environmental permitting processes and occupancy models by addressing gaps in bat species distribution. I am a vertebrate ecophysiologist and bat ecologist by training. My academic research focused on the impacts of disease on host physiology and behavior, and how host traits influence disease outcomes. I am also interested in how interspecific variation in host traits lead to differential susceptibility in groups of at-risk host species. More broadly, my work examines the mechanisms that dictate energy expenditure decisions in mammals during times of energy limitation, such as hibernation, migration, or disease, and how animal physiology can be used as a tool for conservation.

Statewide Bat Specialist

I am a vertebrate ecophysiologist and bat ecologist by training, and I have been a professional biologist since 2015. I am currently the state bat biologist at Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, where my main responsibility is to guide the state’s response to white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease of hibernating bats, and to oversee research initiatives for bat conservation statewide. I currently manage six research projects through TPWD and act as lead PI for three projects, totaling approximately $3 million. My goal is to use data collected in wildlife research to develop timely and actionable wildlife management practices that conserve imperiled species and their habitats, balanced with human economic realities.

Biologist

Division of Biological Infrastructure, Grant Administration Support. As a member of the Division of Biological Infrastructure, I was involved in NSF’s portfolio of large research facilities including the National Ecological Observation Network, Biology Integration Institutes, and human infrastructure initiatives.

Postdoctoral Researcher

Lubbock, Texas, United States

This position was related to a Department of Defense funding opportunity (SERDP) that seeks to evaluate environmental threats to DoD's operations. Our project focused on the spread of white-nose syndrome from endemic areas to naive species in the Rocky Mountains. We used an energetic modeling approach to evaluate the role of hibernation behavior and physiology on bat susceptibility to WNS. As the field lead, I supervised field technicians and helped to design, construct, and deploy a mobile ecophysiology research laboratory. I provided mentorship and advice for students in all stages of their research, from experimental design, to methodologies, to analysis and writing.
