I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in political science including Introduction to American Government, International Relations, the American Presidency, the American Congress, Federalism and Intergovernmental Relations, U.S. Public Policy and special topics courses.My students and I engage in provocative and transformative discussions with intelligence and evidence. I place the highest premium on civility in our discussions, and it frees students across the ideological spectrum to engage in meaningful, sustained dialogue on the most critical issues of our time.I consistently earn outstanding evaluations from students and have a reputation for dynamic, student-centered teaching.

I am an associate of the NCJTC at Fox Valley Technical College. I am a consultant and co-author for the forthcoming revised version of the U.S. Department of Justice publication: What To Do When Your Child Is Missing: A Family Survival Guide. For the first time, this guide will contain helpful information about a special population of missing children-- those who are internationally kidnapped by a parent.

I am a founding member and president emeritus of iStand Parent Network Inc. iStand was borne from my experience bringing my own daughter home from International Parental Child Abduction (IPCA ) to Mali in 2014. I teamed up with local, state, federal and international actors and a vibrant local and online community to bring her home, and now I work with other parents and a growing number of iStand friends and angels to help other children come home, too. iStand Parent Network Inc. empowers parents to return their children home from international parental child abduction to foreign nations. We advocate for the rights of children, access rights for parents and for domestic and international policy reform that returns children home. Our signature programs include the first-ever annual summer camp for IPCA survivors, and an annual Washington DC conference to connect families with resources, skills and strategies to reunite with their children and to forcefully advocate for ehnanced federal response to prevent and end IPCA. iStand is a founding member of the Coalition to End International Parental Child Abduction. I served as Dean of Students of this small Christian college, implementing a Christ-centered environment on campus through vibrant student life programming, chapel coordination and special initiatives to help students achieve academic success, spiritual growth and development, and mission-oriented careers. I upheld student code of conduct and implemented university student life policies. I managed a multi-faceted student life budget and supervised a team of residence life, student programming, spiritual life and academic support services directors. I served on the president's advisory cabinet and facilitated a purpose-driven, engaged campus and community environment.

I was appointed by Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin to lead the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety. During my tenure, crash-related fatalities decreased for the first time in five years, and the seat belt usage rate increased to national average. Our office received a highly favorable federal management review in 2018. We stewarded state and federal funding to achieve a sustained downward trend in fatalities, serious injuries and accidents on Kentucky roadways through engaging community-based education programs, targeted enforcement initiatives, state/federal cooperation and strong partnerships with law enforcement, emergency responders and key stakeholders, I executed $7 million budget through federal grants administration and service delivery to improve traffic safety in the Commonwealth. We partnered with federal, state and local agencies to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries, improve first responder preparedness, manage and mitigate traffic and emergency incidents. I chaired the Governor's Executive Committee on Highway Safety and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Incident Management Task Force, and served as Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesperson for highway safety and incident management. I supervised 44 employees in Highway Safety Programs, Roadway Assistance, and the 24/7 Transportation Operations Center, and together we implemented successful programs to keep Kentucky drivers and pedestrians safe on the roads. We are responsible for providing traffic safety grant funding to law enforcement agencies and educational programs to schools and communities in an effort to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities on Kentucky roadways.

I also coordinated college readiness initiatives for students who needed enhanced academic, co-curricular and non-cognitive supports to propel their success at MSU. I supervised the university's developmental math redesign initiative, and served as the university developmental education representative to the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education. I helped students strengthen their strategic and critical reading skills to compete and persist in college-level courses. My students typically scored below benchmarks on standardized tests like COMPASS and ACT, and some of them truly needed the brief remediation before entering advanced courses.

I taught Peace Studies and College Readiness courses in English Composition and Strategic Reading. My students and I engaged in important discussions. We produced anthologies of their writing and served our community through volunteer and social justice initiatives. I also served as system chairperson for the Kentucky Community & Technical College System Developmental English Curriculum Committee.

By far one of the most exquisite jobs I've ever had. It paid nothing, but the opportunities to connect with my community, to write important stories about addiction, mental illness, sentencing reform and health care that involved those very citizens far exceeded the pay differential. I wrote about widows, mothers, addicts and politicians. I covered the doings of City Council, and sat at the table to cover county government operations. I went on rides with county crews during snow weather, and covered quirky stories in this beloved community. I won the 2012 Newswriting Award for the Kentucky Rural Health Assn and also won the 2011 Excellence in Ky Newspapers "Best Series" award for Kentucky Press Association.

I taught undergraduate and graduate courses American Government, International Relations and Social Work. I coordinated student engagement, service learning initiatives and made connections with students that endure today. We staged a Die-In to commemorate the Rwandan Genocide, planted a Peace Tree on campus and rallied in Washington DC against the barbaric cruelty of people conscripting children as soldiers.Our classroom discussions intersected on poverty, wealth, race, class, gender, politics and international relations. We staged mock International Criminal Court classes and learned and practiced justice and inquiry in our Model ICC. It was an enriching time that I hope left a legacy of love, service and zeal for scholarship and activism.
