Do what you've always done. Get what you've always got. You need alternative perspectives. scott@dscottsmith.com.Small business owners often wear many hats and are pulled in multiple directions, making it difficult to stay focused on high-level strategic decisions. That's where a Chief of Staff can make a big difference. A Chief of Staff is a professional who acts as a strategic advisor, project manager, and people manager to help leaders focus on their organization's most important priorities.Owning and running a small business can be a lonely and challenging experience. Entrepreneurs are often faced with numerous stressors, including long hours, financial pressures, and decision-making responsibilities. Without someone to confide in and seek advice from, the journey of building a successful business can be isolating and overwhelming. That's where a strategic advisor, such as a Chief of Staff, comes in. Such an advisor can understand the unique stressors that come with owning and running a small business. They can provide empathy and support, and "tell it like it is" when it comes to tough business decisions. Having a trusted advisor who has been through the ups and downs of business ownership will provide comfort and help entrepreneurs stay focused on their goals.I am available to speak to your organization live or virtually about business.

Interim General ManagerMastercraft Furniture 2013 - 2014Manufacturer of upholstered furniture for IKEA.Mastercraft has been a regional manufacturer of upholstered furniture in Oregon since 1984. The company changed to a new business model in 2011 becoming a manufacturer for IKEA. Regional furniture manufacturing involves low volume production with a large variety of articles with sales to many small retail stores; the new model called for a limited product line produced in high volume. The bulk of all sales went to a single customer (IKEA) which would purchase all product built; Mastercraft became a producer of a commodity. My role was to stabilize production, identify cost saving opportunities, prepare financial analysis, and an execution plan to partner with the IKEA team. Results during my tenure as Interim General Manager:• Formalized communications structures implemented;• Short-term and long-range budgeting developed;• Weekly production increased: 35.73%;• Production volumes stabilized: weekly variance +/- 2.27% (prior: +/- 11.2%);• Sales increased 15% (on target to exceed $15 million in 2014);• Labor (% of sales) decreased 1.0% (saving $140,000 annually).

Chief Executive OfficerEarth Fortification Supplies Company (Earthfort) 2010 - 2014Corvallis, Or, UsSpecialty agricultural company focusing on soil microbiology.I transformed a soil lab into an agricultural products company offering: proprietary products, consulting, and lab services. The company had been reselling a products; I led the development of proprietary products, introducing new sales channels and sales & marketing plans. The company structure and staffing was updated to match the redefined business; this included a buyout of former owner and securing external investment. The company is executing on the business plan.Earthfort is an agricultural business with an emphasis in the measurement and management of soil biology. Earthfort labs and offices are located in Corvallis, Oregon – the heart of the rich Willamette Valley. The company has been working with growers from around the world since 2005.Earthfort Labs conduct soil biological analysis, and Earthfort proprietary soil amendments .balance soil to match the target crop. Earthfort provides tools to manage microbiology soil health. The Earthfort lab will aid you in determining what types of products to add, application rates, and give you the ability to monitor changes to ensure your soil is moving in the desired direction. The Earthfort database contains the results of over 20k samples from crops around the world. In an unmanaged system, such as a forest, no one is fertilizing and there is no crop rotation yet the plants grow and the soil is not depleted. Microbes in the soil breakdown the organic matter that falls to the forest floor and cycles it into a form of nutrient the plants can use. In managed systems, such as agriculture, landscapes, and horticulture, the products and practices can damage the biology, limiting their ability to cycle nutrients. The beneficial microbes in the soil are measured by Earthfort to the benefit of crops.Take control of your soil. -

Chief Operating OfficerGibson Holders, Inc. Oct 2007 - May 2008Gibson Holders, Inc. has been designing and refining a line of adjustable wire display stands and acrylic display products since 1962. These products are used by retail stores, wholesale showrooms, offices, and in homes worldwide.I first consulted with the company on the operations. Learning about the current state of operations, I reviewed the market & competitors. I compiled my findings and made recommendations to expand the product line. The existing management did expand the product offerings and extended an offer to me as COO. As COO, I conducted an in-depth review: the process involved: 1. Creating a strategic plan which included an internal and external strength & opportunity analysis; 2. Defining appropriate metrics & timing, which included budgeting and cost analysis; 3. Implementing manufacturing and sales plans (this involved capacity planning as well as defining customers & markets); 4. Conducting separate Operational and Strategic reviews to monitor progress and make corrections; and, 5. Evaluating progress to targets and making changes in the Tactical and Operational execution.Strategic and Tactical budgeting and planning were implemented and company performance exceeded expectations. The total improvement during the two years of my involvement in the bottom line was over 142%.The sales had been declining year-over-year prior to my involvement. My focus and activity brought sales to a year-over-year increase and the company moved to profitability. My actions to create the business turn-around led to the sale of the company to investors.
