-Contract position through February 2019-Employing various field sampling techniques to characterize soil strength by desert landform type -Field sites are located throughout the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts; data will be used by the U.S. military to better understand conditions that exist in deserts worldwide to achieve higher-efficiency travel-Responsible for data collection, regular use of handheld GPS, data entry in Microsoft Excel, and occasional analysis using GIS-Regular travel to remote field sites; includes navigating off-road using a 4WD vehicle and GPS-Worked in small groups (2-3 others) in the field, and independently when in the office-Regular troubleshooting and problem-solving when unexpected issues arise

My research was understanding social tolerance of white-tailed deer in Saskatchewan: this involved creating, organizing, and distributing a province-wide mail survey to rural landowners in addition to conducting seven in-person interviews with different stakeholders to assess the degree to which they value deer. This was done in response to landowner concerns about deer damage to property.Skills and experience:-I was the first student in my program to be accepted for the full award amount for the Saskatchewan Fish and Wildlife Development Fund grant ($5,000)-Experience drafting and tracking a budget, and keeping records of purchases-Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and working with databases and large datasets-Experience with rangeland, farmland, and wetland vegetation monitoring- Experience interpreting complex technical forms and research literature (natural and social sciences)-Working knowledge of GIS and handheld GPS devices-I provided recommendations based on my research results to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment for consideration in future management plans. I was asked to present my findings at their Wildlife Management Unit meeting in the fall of 2018

Based in a remote Arctic outpost in the Brooks Range, I was responsible for safe vehicle operation on a 180-mile section of the Dalton Highway from the Arctic Circle north; gained experience in extreme conditions on the Ice Road-Provided guests of diverse nationalities with environmental, biological, historical, cultural, and oil industry/pipeline information for the Arctic region of Alaska-Educated visitors on the aurora borealis and guided night tours to isolated cabin-Solo and group backpacking for up to 7 days in Arctic wilderness in all terrain and weather, devoid of trails or roads-Talked at length with subsistence-reliant locals and Indigenous peoples to expand my knowledge-Selected to lead tours for multiple travel writers
