I provided expert knowledge to enhance the design and implementation of a new institutional framework for integrated assessment modelling that will enhance RIVM’s capabilities to assist stakeholders to solve complex policy challenges.

I led a diverse research and consultancy portfolio focused on outlining options and exploring scenarios for achieving sustainable development across scales from both thematic and integrated perspectives. I undertook a range of spatial ecology research to enhance systematic biodiversity conservation across scales. Key projects included:Helping finalizing a new national, multi-scale environmental classification (LENZ) for the Ministry for the EnvironmentAssisting development of a web-based biosecurity risk assessment tool (BIOSECURE) for use by end-usersReviewing the utility of landscape indices to support biodiversity management for the NZ Department of Conservation.

I was a founding member of the Science Leadership Team of an innovative, transdisciplinary 10-year research program with the mission of enabling New Zealanders to adapt, manage risk and thrive in a changing climate. I designed the initial 5-year, $3.5 million NZD programme plan in close consultation with stakeholders to meet critical climate change questions and adaptation needs, including convening national webinars to maximise the opportunity for input from other researchers, end-users, and the public.

I co-wrote the Impacts & Implications section of the Challenge proposal to help $23 million NZD in government funding over a 10-year period.

I compiled and analysed a fine-scale, spatiotemporal land use/land cover database to support interdisciplinary fisheries & wildlife research, including programming protocols for efficient and accurate heads-up digitisation of historic land use/land cover data and land use/cover change analysis.

I managed the establishment and growth of a high-performance, mixed-platform (UNIX, Windows, MacOS) computing environment for ecological modelling and simulation research including maintaining hardware & software, ordering supplies, and hiring, supervising & mentoring undergraduate assistants.

I set-up, maintained, and enhanced the department’s first public web site including teaching myself web design, coding web pages (HTML), installing & administering Apache web server software, and monitoring activity & solving problems.

I helped design and teach “Application of Geographic Information Systems to Natural Resources Management,” the department’s first GIS course, including preparing & teaching labs and assisting students with lab projects and solving problems.

I taught 3 sections of general biology labs per semester (~75 students) including preparing lab lectures and quizzes, assisting lab setup, grading lab assignments & reports, and maintaining 3-5 contact hours outside of lab.

I provided environmental consulting services to government and private clients including environmental impact analysis (e.g., National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, etc.), site selection, agency coordination, selection and oversight of subcontractors, client liaison, and policy analysis. Principle projects were working on a national military communications network (GWEN) for the US Air Force and two national weather radar networks - NEXRAD for the US Weather Service and TWDR for the FAA.For those projects I was a member of interdisciplinary site selection teams tasked with locating and recommending new sites for the networks. I provided expert environmental guidance during site selection. For approximately 30 selected sites I coordinated all aspects of the environmental assessments and wrote the formal assessment reports on behalf of the client in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. For each assessment I oversaw all aspects of coordination with relevant federal, state, and local agencies, Native Americans, and other interested parties, analysed potential impacts, and recommended specific mitigations as needed.

I provided care for and assisted in training of Alex, an African grey parrot, in a long-term study conceived and lead by Dr. Irene Pepperberg to understand Alex’s ability to communicate in English and apply the learnings in novel ways.
