Responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the main engine, auxiliary engines and all critical equipment when on watch and that the safety requirements stipulated by risk assessments and permits to work are upheld at all times. Also responsible for ensuring the UPS batteries tested, charged and functioning correctly.The job requires a comprehensive knowledge of:• Computerised Planned Maintenance System.• Cooling/drinking water analysis.Currently undertaking an OPITO approved ERRV on-board training course for proficiency as crew member on standby vessels.

This role required holding a watch in the engine room to ensure the safe operation of the main engine, auxiliary engines and all critical equipment. It also required the ability to work independently in order to diagnose and repair problematic machinery.I was in charge of the operation and maintenance of:• Sludge, bilge and oily waste equipment • Incinerator • Vacuum toilet system, Sewage plant • ME LO Purifiers, A.E LO Purifiers and HFO Purifiers• Control, Service and Main Air Compressors• Lifeboats A large part of this job was the meticulous upkeep of documents such as:• Garbage disposal book• Oil Record Book • Sewage Record book.Safety was a primary concern: this included preparing risk assessments, work permits and other paperwork and ensuring that the safety requirements were upheld during the job. The job required assisting with other tasks as required such as:• Assisting in overhaul of the main propulsion plant; removing cylinder heads and pistons from a large 2-stroke Man B&W engine. • Assisting senior engineers with safety drills, safety tests. I was responsible for taking bunkers under direction from Chief Engineer.The job also required comprehensive knowledge of• Computerised Planned Maintenance System.• Boiler water, Cooling water and drinking water analysis and associated data entry software. • Ship stores software.

Assisted preparing the vessel for arrival and departure including starting or stopping main and auxiliary equipment, carrying out checks on running equipment, carrying out orders from Chief Engineer and bridge whilst manoeuvring.Assisting senior engineers with any major overhauls, such as removing cylinder heads on Main Engines.Assisting the 4th Engineer in the movement and disposal of bilge water, sludge, oily waste on board and completing the Oil Record Book. Assisting the 4th Engineer when taking bunkers on board.Assist with operation and maintenance of Sewage plant.

Shadowing engineers on board and assisting with daily operations and maintenance tasks.Completing MCA approved portfolio to show the knowledge gained during these trips.Completing inspections and overhauls of auxiliary machinery such as purifiers, compressors auxiliary generators (under supervision).Tracing pipelines to understand the operation of different systems.Undertaking research for a design project to be completed as part of Professional Diploma which involved designing a functioning fuel purification room.
