About David Whitworth

David Whitworth BSc MSc FGS FGMSI am an experienced and versatile geoscientist and researcher, with direct applied experience in Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS), Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), geothermal exploration, and oil & gas. I have worked in both research and industrial consulting environments, and I am adept at transferring skills between the two spheres.I am a passionate advocate for early career geoscientists and researchers, and for improving access and uptake of geology in schools & universities. As a STEM Ambassador, I am currently working (in my free time) on a Royal Society-funded research project, collaborating with a secondary school in Lincolnshire, investigating the relationship between coastal geomorphology and offshore energy infrastructure.Employment:2025: Lay Clerk, St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle2024 - Present: Junior Geologist - Merlin Energy2022 - 2024: Graduate Geologist - Merlin Energy2021: Geothermal Analyst - Westwood Global Energy2020 - Present: Doctoral Research Scientist (Carbon Storage & Sedimentology) - Keele University2019: Geoscience Intern - Westwood Global EnergyVolunteering:Charity Founder & CEO - Geoscience Support NetworkChair - Cathedral Music Trust Future Leaders CommitteeCommittee Member - The Geological Society: Equality, Diversity, Inclusion & AccessibilityCommittee Member - Sedimentologika research journalAcademia:PhD Earth Sciences - Keele University 2020-MSc Petroleum Geoscience (Distinction) - RHUL 19/20BSc Petroleum Geology (1st Class Hons) - RHUL 16/19Awards:Geological Society President's Award 2023Halliburton Earth Model Award finalist 2021FindAUniversity Masters Student of the Year 2020AAPG Imperial Barrel Award European semi-finalist 2020Frank Barker Prize Winner 2019RHUL Gold Passport Award 2019RHSU Honorary Membership Award 2019Lyell Scholarship Award 2018Music:Freelance CountertenorLay Clerk, St. George's Chapel, Windsor CastleCo-Chair, Cathedral Music Trust Future Leaders Committee 2024Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum Lay Clerk 2023Derby Cathedral Lay Clerk 2021-23Genesis Sixteen 2017-18Royal Holloway Chapel Choir 2016-18Truro Cathedral Scholar 2015-16VOCES8 Scholar 2015-16RSCM Millennium Youth Choir 2012-2017RSCM Northern Cathedral Singers 2012-2017Grimsby Minster Choir 2004-2020Keen chef, musician & dog owner.
