Client : Medco Health SolutionsApplication Modernisation: Designed and delivered a series of application modernizations, re-architecting appropriately to ensure success. These included replacing VAX VMS ‘C’ code with C++ on Windows, porting from Windows C++ to Linux minimising risk by creating surrogate MFC classes and replacing Visual Basic User Interfaces with Java.Quality Assurance: Developed the test scripts for Integration & QA Testing and performed IT & QA testing for releases into production on the client’s site in Philadelphia, USA.

Responsible for the full SDLC for the suite of systems which control Medco Health’s network of automated and manual pharmacies. This role encompassed project management, architecture & development including:Project planning & reporting, recruitment, resource allocation and monitoring, estimating and budget management.Developed, executed, monitored and refined quality standards.Motivating both client and internal staff, performing code & design reviews.Defining high level architectures, creating detailed designs ensuring the performances and resilience of this real time, fault tolerant, secure suite of systems. Writing, executing & reviewing test scripts for all phases (unit, integration, QA, commissioning)Key initiatives during this period included:Performance: Increased dispensing capacity by 50% by architecting, designing and delivering many enhancements.New Facilities: Developing on time and to budget the Pharmacy Automation Control systems for use in two $100 million facilities and leading the client’s commissioning team for a successful Operational Qualification.Automated Mail Manifest and Sortation System: Architected, designed and lead a team to develop a new, bespoke system to replace an existing automated package sortation system with a much improved system to be used at all Medco’s pharmacies. This project involved the full life cycle from functional specification through design to integration on-site. Savings of over $2 million resulting from improved operator efficiency and postage reduction were achieved.Offshore Development: Built the first successful offshore team providing resources to build Medco’s pharmacy automation software. Software Engineer (1985 - 1987): Software development and support of a manufacturing data management and transfer system used to control NC data. Design, development and support of a generic Graphical User Interface (GUI) for in-house CAD/CAM systems. This required an in-depth study of many aspects of computer graphics, particularly emerging standards such as PHIGS Software Development Team Leader (1987-1989): Responsible for a team of engineers involved with developing, maintaining and supporting PANOPLIE, a CAD/CAM package used for the production of flat components in use at five British Aerospace sites. This software, originally purchased from Aerospatiale allowed users to design components, create toolpaths and nest components together so as to optimise the material usage whilst satisfying customer orders.
