As far back as elementary school, I've been fascinated by computers and technology. There was no place that I was happier than in the school computer lab, learning a few lines of BASIC or trying out the latest in edutainment software from MECC. I consider myself a lifelong learner, and have found ways to satisfy my interest in computers throughout my adulthood. I've taken coursework in information technology classes, and I like reading technical manuals on operating systems to learn ways to improve or customize performance. In the last few years, I started looking to programming again. Learning skills that focused around problem solving and logic seemed to be a good fit for me. Many of my hobbies, including board games, video games, and jigsaw puzzles, are interests that all rely heavily on problem solving concepts. As I started learning how to code, I faced two challenges. One was setting aside time for something that was essentially another hobby, and the other was figuring out just where to start. Finding Nashville Software School was a leap in setting be on a path to success. Attending an info night for interested students where pre-coursework books and attending tech related Meetups were recommended, I started both right away. The books helped be find the starting point I was looking for. At the Meetups, I met experienced developers that offered advice and shared experiences that led me to the conclusion software development had to be my new career field. After talking to several NSS graduates, I decided the part-time program offered by the school was perfect for me. I was thrilled the day I found out I had been accepted. And while a year of full-time work and evening classes is not easy, the skills and experience in teamwork and communication would have been missed if I had continued trying to learn on my own.I am now eagerly searching for my first junior developer position.
