About Dwayne Simmons
I have had the following professional goals: investigating the underlying mechanisms that lead to hearing loss, investigating early markers of neurodegeneration, and providing academic leadership in undergraduate and graduate programs. Much of my recent research has focused on the role of calcium regulation in sensory cells and immune cells of the inner ear as well as synaptic development and loss. I provide academic leadership in STEM programs that focus on undergraduate research training and on graduate recruitment at institutions with large populations from underrepresented backgrounds. I serve as an academic advisor to several organizations and serve extramurally on local and national committees and boards. I have made it my personal priority to create programs that enhance the undergraduate and graduate experience while providing greater opportunities to students from diverse groups.
