In order to transform MD&S into an entity capable of delivering modern, best-in-class software and hardware integration solutions to the rest of Merck, I has tasked to build a team to define the new software technology strategy, and lead the software division through business transformation to enact it. As well as defining the vision for the technology strategy, this included the new pipeline for innovation projects, implementation of a bimodal release strategy, building up a collection of partners and suppliers able to work in a systems-integration-first manner. Covering the Enterprise and Solutions architecture space, my team also delivered best practice, created new processes for the Quality team to operate against SAAS / IAAS services, enterprise architecture principles, and an agile approach to prototyping in product R&D.

I was brought into TfL to help define and enact a 15 year vision for the future of public transport in London, as Enterprise Architect for the Surface Intelligent Transport System, a nine-figure multi-year strategic programme. This covered business transformation, disruptive/emerging technology, procurement, engagement, technology and architectural strategy, enabling TfL to meet the challenges of London's surface transport for the next 15 years. I was the primary author of the Target Operating Model for the future of TfL's surface transport strategy, and also lead the creation of a number of prototypes of cutting edge technology, such as: - natural language processing, with sentiment analysis via AI, - geo-targeting social media and GIS technologies, - large scale data integration and ontology creation as proof of concepts to demonstrate the viability of the future technology strategy.

As a member of the Enterprise Architect team, I was the lead architect on a major transformational project at Elsevier. A complete overhaul of the Open Access model of content publication covered changes to websites and applications, process, business analysis, commercial and academic aspects of the pipeline.

At Omnifone I was a key member of the Solutions Architects team, responsible for the largest partner project and delivering high profile partner solutions. This role covered pre-sales technical consultancy to delivery, leading customer technical discussions, developing technical strategy including architectural and commercial gap analysis and evaluation of services, and solution specification and design. I also championed compliance with security and operability constraints, liaised with the core Engineering, Licensing, Operations and Product teams, and implemented cutting edge R&D tools for audio, compression and encryption work. I reported directly to the VP of Solutions and the COO, and handled technical ownership to a board/director level both internally and with partners.• At Sony Music Unlimited I was the principal architect responsible for technical overview, design and strategy, including areas such as licensing, reporting, development and operations. This included management of a worldwide service deployment across multiple devices, many bespoke to Sony, from mobiles to consoles to embedded systems. The service expanded its subscribers by over 6x during the 2 years I lead the project. • I was the principal architect for Pono, the high-profile Kickstarter-backed high-quality music service lead by Neil Young, for which Omnifone was delivering the discovery, catalogue, licensing and content services. As well as driving Pono’s success by delivering to very aggressive timescales, there were several challenges around ingestion, storage and global distribution of extremely large high-quality files, and integrating with the other teams providing the hardware, web portal and desktop application services. I also acted as the technical authority on high quality audio formats, compression and watermarking.• At BMW I was lead architect for Omnifone’s delivery of the first in-car integrated cloud music solution, available in multiple countries at launch.

I joined WHR through Serco to lead the creation of the Technology Strategy and Enterprise Architecture to support the Business Strategy for 2011-2015, expanding the Premier Inn and Costa brands greatly across the UK and into international markets. My role also included working on strategy to CTO-level and interfacing with lead architects from other suppliers. The duration of my appointment here reflects my leaving Serco in January 2012.Key responsibilities:• I was the chief architect for the refresh and migration of WHR's infrastructure and application systems due for delivery in 2012. Key goals are a move toward a federated architecture to leverage additional suppliers and increase delivery agility. Services will be deployed to private cloud systems where possible, to take advantage of Software as a Service benefits, and reduce technical management overhead. • I designed a technical governance process for project review, artefact approval and security review, to tie into the existing WHR PRINCE2-based process. • I authored a strategy on desktop and mobile consumerisation, supporting WHR's vision of access "from any device, anywhere". This has now become a white paper distributed across Serco's Chief Architects Office as a model to deliver consumerisation across Serco's government and commercial clients.

As Technical Design Authority I adopted an Enterprise/Solution architect role, supplying technical strategy, governance and approvals, contributing to the Technology Strategy and assisting the business in meeting the strategy.I provided reviews and consultancy for technical projects, and was the technical signing authority for the Quality Assurance Group. I chaired the Technology Assurance Group, a collection of internal and third-party supplier Solution Architects that provide direction to the strategy, and had regular input to the Crisis Response Unit. I worked on a number of large-scale projects including infrastructure upgrades, architecture design for deployment of services to cloud computing, authoring the data storage strategy, cross-supplier federated architecture strategy, contributing to the System Architecture Design and providing Enterprise Architecture input to align our processes to TOGAF 9. I was also lead architect for the Convergence Capability team, tasked with providing 95% of government transactions and content through Business Link by 2011. This required interfacing with a large number of Government departments, and a wide variety of existing systems. I delivered the first 2 years on-track, as well as defining and documenting processes and development, providing requirements and design for future developments, and expanding the team.

As Head of Development I combined the duties of development lead with management responsibilities. Reporting directly to the CTO, I was responsible for the entire ADVFN codebase. I was responsible for implementing the technical strategy I co-authored with the CTO, and project managed the technical development and localisation teams for 9 countries worldwide. I designed the architecture of new systems, identified task dependencies and managed the rollout and release of these projects. I overhauled the company's release system for all technologies, introducing a dedicated QA/testing team. I worked with the systems team on release management and version control software to enable instantaneous roll-forward and roll-back of releases across the server farm, and introduced staggered/segmented-release beta testing periods. I also introduced agile and extreme (XP) development methods to great success, from storyboarding to managing Scrum-style agile, iterative development. Aside from experience managing a software development team, my time with ADVFN also gave me sound knowledge of the markets and trading, both through the development directly, and the community of traders who use the site. From a technical standpoint, it gave me insight in both the management and development of real-time critical systems and managing a highly agile software release environment, balancing rapid application development with system stability and reliability.

During this seven-year period I operated primarily as a contractor, using a variety of skills in a wide set of environments, from small, technology-oriented start-ups to large corporations. These projects involved anything from short-term problem-solving on existing platforms to full solution architecture on greenfield sites. During this period I lead development projects for Walt Disney Internet Group, Sporting Odds, Ladbrokes, Marks and Spencer, HP.com, boots.co.uk, wc98.com (FIFA World Cup official website) among others.
