"An Analytical Description of Cartilage Thickness Mapping and Shape of the Cervical Spine Facet Joints" (Dec 2006 - Nov 2007) • To develop the first 3-D computational map of cartilage in human cervical vertebrae zygophyseal joints, I worked in conjunction with a graduate student to design and implement a procedure utilizing cross-sectional slices of facet joints dissected from human cadaver spines. A custom program allowed for the manual identification of cartilage boundaries within the scaled image of each slice. Subsequent math code generated precise geometrical paramaters."Diametral Compression: A Computational and Experimental Investigation of a New Bone Strength Test" (May 2007 - Aug 2007)• To validate a novel bone strength test, hollow cross-sections of cortical bone were physically tested under diametral compression and compared to their digital analogs using finite element analysis. The results supported the novel test as an efficient alternative to whole-bone 4-point bending models."Determination of the Transverse Mechanical Properties of Bovine Long Bones" (Aug 2007 - Dec 2007) • To verify data from a related study using the same bones, “dog-bone” specimens were intricately machined from bovine femoral and tibial cortical bone using a custom fixture. The ultimate tensile strength, strain at fracture, and elastic modulus were calculated for each specimen using force and displacement data collected from a materials testing machine. These mechanical properties fell within the range of other published literature values and validated data from the relevant study.Collaborated as a research assistant in a wide range of other studies with engineers, surgeons, and graduate students involving: surgical procedures and implants; generating and validating finite element models of anatomical features; biomechanical testing; and tissue dissections.
