Profile bio

About Dylan Hicks

I have my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, with the Applied Concentration, from Metropolitan State University of Denver finishing with a 3.46 GPA. My minor was in Computer Science. I have never received a lower grade than an A in all of my math classes and only have received one grade lower than that, a B, in my computer science classes. I have great experience with object oriented programming and numerical/real analysis from both personal and professional environments. I also have built several computers from the ground up, so I have minor experience with hardware. I am fast paced, light-hearted, and quick to apply newly taught skills. My goals are to enjoy life, travel much, and expand my knowledge of other cultures. I currently am very happy at my position at NTIA, and my ideal work environments are ones that are very laid back and encouraging. Also, not that it matters, but recently I have been working two part-time jobs as a reviewer for a pop culture website, Comic Crusaders, and as a colorist for the independent comic book Phantom Squad. I hope one day that I can be a good enough writer to actually produce a few of my own ideas on paper.

Listed skills include Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Java, Oop, and 36 others.

Colorist

Phantom Squad

Phantom Squad is a comic book published independently by writer Gabe Cohen. My job on the title is coloring the pages left by the line artist and ink artist. This is done with Photoshop, and I use many techniques involving cel shading, cuts and gradients, brush tools, masks, channels, and textures. So far, I have worked on issues four and five.

Freelance Journalist

Orlando, Florida, Us

Every week I get a batch of comic books from my editor to choose from, so I can read them and write a review. My limit is three books maximum. Most reviews that I are do are pretty basic 600 word synopsis, but every now and then I get creative. This usually leads to about 1200+ words. I love this position, and the people that I work with.

Jan 2016 - Sep 2018

Software Developer

Washington, Dc, Us

I work in a lab where I am expected to interpret and analyze data that is given to me. In addition, I am also expected to write software that is clean, understandable, modularized, and well documented. Which is easily done by staying up to date on modern practices, libraries, and algorithms. Of course, this also means that I have to constantly read books, like Effective C++, Eloquent Javascript, The Rust Book, and Effective Python; along with online blogs and watching lectures. Currently, I am working on three major projects. The first is simulating an entire LTE network and measuring the aggregate emission interference it generates. I have had to self-train myself on C++14, Git, CMAKE, GDB, and Python, which are both tools I use to develop the software. To test our algorithms, mainly the mathematical ones, my team and I use GTest for extensive unit testing. It should be known that I intend on rewriting this project using R-Trees, eliminating raw for-loops and pointers, along with removing inheritance in lieu of the composition design pattern. My second project is one that I actually manage. I am the product owner of a software project which absorbs any ELF shared libraries, described by a JSON file, and provide a user-friendly interface for engineers. This was written in Python, using some new TDD/BDD/Property-Based Testing techniques that I have learned. In addition, I also re-wrote a very old propagation model, originally in FORTRAN, into Rust as a proof of concept; that was a lot of fun! This is the first project that I have been an owner of, and I have been very Agile in my approach. Using that has made it easier to stay on track, change based on user feedback, and even train the intern working with me.Lastly is the terrain services project. The goal for this is to set up a server with a RESTful API to provide terrain extraction services to our internal, and one day external, clients. This is done using Flask, GUnicorn, NGINX, MongoDB, and Docker.
