I was responsible for evolving a promising prototype into a fully functional proof of concept. The project involved building robust gesture recognition models and integrating real-time TTS capabilities to translate South African Sign Language (SASL) into spoken audio across 11 official languages. Using tools like OpenCV, TensorFlow, and scikit-learn, I ensured the interpreter was optimized for smooth operation and multilingual support.While the current iteration focuses on core functionality, I identified potential pathways for a hybrid cloud-edge deployment. The concept involves real-time processing on-site with minimal hardware—a camera, screen, and speakers—supported by distributed architecture for enhanced speed and reliability. I began evaluating low-level languages like Rust and C++ to explore how we could build a scalable, high-performance system in the future
