About Dylan Williams

I conduct molecular and genetic epidemiology to investigate the causes of neurovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. These manifest as major health problems in older individuals, including cerebral small vessel disease (a precursor to stroke and vascular dementia), Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. My research has also focused on the discovery and repurposing of therapeutics that could prevent or treat these conditions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I served as a lead research fellow for one of the UK's national core studies investigating the causes and consequences of COVID-19, with a particular focus on the burden of long COVID in the population (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/covid-19-longitudinal-health-wellbeing/).I currently hold funding as a principal investigator to examine the roles of common infections in cerebrovascular and Alzheimer's diseases, and to help establish why the protein apolipoprotein E is so critical for dementia risk.

Dept. Of Medical Epidemiology & Biostatistics (Meb), Solna Sweden
Using longitudinal data on molecular and genetic measures related to ageing, with particular reference to their roles in the aetiologies of cognitive decline and frailty/sarcopenia development. Studies utilise multiple cohort resources, including those of the Swedish Twin Registry (e.g. SATSA, TwinGene).
  • Imperial College London
    Research Associate
Imperial College London Jul 2014 - Jan 2016
Epidemiology And Biostatistics, School Of Public Health
Working predominantly with data from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort studies, using life course epidemiology approaches to examine whether metabolites measured throughout life are causally associated with healthy ageing and later life risk of chronic diseases, particularly type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
  • The Academy Of Medical Sciences
    Policy Officer
The Academy Of Medical Sciences Mar 2013 - Jun 2014
Projects included working to secure positive outcomes from research-related EU legislation, the use of animals in research, public health-related projects (e.g. examining the future of the Census in England and Wales). Regular tasks included literature reviews, briefing preparations, scrutiny and analysis of legislation, database management, line management of interns, and project, meeting and event coordination.
  • University Of Bristol
    Phd Student
University Of Bristol Oct 2008 - Dec 2012
School Of Social And Community Medicine
My thesis examined vitamin D status in early life (prenatal life, childhood and adolescence) in relation to cardiovascular risk factors. I used a combination of life course and genetic epidemiological approaches, including cross-sectional and prospective studies, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), genome-wide complex trait analysis (GCTA) and Mendelian randomisation.I obtained 10 academic publications during my PhD (5 first author, 5 second author), and presented orally twice at international conferences, and presented posters at two others.
