DoD Exchange Scientist and Engineer Program-Germany participant. Both Germany and the US are interested in lightning strike protection for carbon-fiber-based aviation systems. Developed a method for incorporating zinc oxide nanowires into epoxy resin for creating carbon-fiber reinforced panels. The panels were tested to determine if the electrical conductivity was improved--it was, but not enough to prevent damage from a lightning strike.

Investigated the influence of individual phonon modes on the thermal conductivity of carbon nanotubes. Knowing this influence is useful in engineering better CNT-based composites for thermal applications. Used nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to estimate thermal conductivity in single-wall, double-wall, and functionalized carbon nanotube models. Developed a novel approach of confining vibrational modes in carbon nanotubes to isolate the effect of mode combinations.

Developed computational models to simulate interfaces of polymers used in carbon fiber composites and performed nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to understand thermal transport at the interfaces of the composites.

Performed acquisition tasks to develop and procure a compression molded compound using metal nanoparticles and carbon fibers.

Studied the potential use of ZnO nanowires in polymer composite chemical sensors. Fabricated ZnO nanowires using chemical vapor deposition and assembled a polymer composite using P3HT to improve sensor sensitivity. The performance of the sensor was assessed by measuring changes in the I-V characteristics when the device was exposed to various chemical vapors.

Performed compression test to study the effects carbon nanotube-filled epoxies have on the mechanical properties of carbon fiber composites. Independently designed and fabricated compression test cylinders and established collaboration with researchers at local university to perform compression tests on samples. Discovered the shear strength of filament wound carbon fiber composites improved with the inclusion of single-walled carbon nanotubes in the epoxy resin and hardener
