In my role as a Research Intern at Hexis Lab, I am involved in the development and optimization of advanced skincare and hair care formulations using cutting-edge biotechnology methods. My responsibilities include the precise mixing of raw materials, preparation of stock solutions, and formulation of complex blends, with a focus on integrating naturally available compounds. I excel in determining the optimal solute-to-solvent ratio to achieve perfectly homogenized solutions. I conduct in-depth cellular assays, such as viability, proliferation, and differentiation tests, utilising hair and skin cell lines to evaluate formulation efficacy and safety. My technical skills include spectroscopy techniques for quantitative analysis, as well as staining and culturing techniques for detailed cellular investigation. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Sola and Dr. Eva, and with Professor Safwan Akram as my university supervisor, I am acquiring extensive experience in cell culture, solution preparation, assay development, and data analysis. This position allows me to contribute to innovative research and sustainable advancements in biotechnology.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Hong Gao I commence my transformative journey as a summer student researcher at the National Horizon Centre, Darlington. Thanks to the generous summer studentship grant from the Society of Applied Microbiology International, we are engaging into cutting-edge research to combat Tuberculosis (TB), a persistent global health threat intensified by drug-resistant strains. Our project focuses on the heterologous expression of a Biosynthetic Gene Cluster (BGC) to produce a novel Capuramycin Analogue, aiming to enhance antibiotic effectiveness against TB. Specifically, we are working with well-characterised bacterial hosts, including Streptomyces coelicolor M1152, Streptomyces lividans TK24, and Streptomyces albus J1074, to evaluate their synthesis capabilities and the antimicrobial activities of the new compound. Utilising advanced electroporation techniques, we aim to transfer the BGC-containing plasmid, pUHA3, into these strains and monitor mutant growth with a plate reader, evaluating the antimicrobial potential of crude bacterial extracts. This research not only contributes to global efforts in developing new treatments for drug-resistant TB along with reasonable consumption of requirements and minimising waste production, aligning with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 3 for good health and Goal 12 for responsible consumption and production, but also provides vital training in area of microbiology, molecular biology and biochemistry chemistry, supporting Goal 4 for quality education. #appliedmicrobiologyinternational #studentresearcher #summerstudentship #grant #drugresistanttb #fightagainsttuberculosis

Under the mentorship of Professor Gillian Taylor this project employed Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) techniques to meticulously analyse leather artefacts sourced from Vindolanda, dating back to the Roman civilisation. My work involved conducting a thorough examination of the chemical composition and degradation patterns of these invaluable artefacts. By leveraging GC/MS data, I successfully identified organic compounds within the artefacts, unraveling crucial insights into their material composition, manufacturing techniques, preservation methods, and ultimately, their profound historical significance.
