I pursued a degree in Ecology because I followed my passion. When I was little, I would watch nature documentaries over Disney movies, be really worried about climate change, and be frustrated about how our leaders are not doing nearly enough for our environment. By becoming an Ecologist, I can truly understand how the changing world and climate are affecting whole systems and mini-systems within those big systems. If I understand the problem, I hope to pave the way to a solution. One goal of mine is to show the average person how connected our natural environments are to our way of life. We cannot exist how we are today without our natural systems.Currently, I am mainly involved in the laboratory and research space where I can see first-hand and work with the changing data. I am very motivated and enjoy working in these spaces. Not only have I maintained high laboratory and research project grades during my degree, my skills in these areas are reflected in my work experience. General laboratory skills are being organized, collected good and honest data, be highly communicative, be safe, work well as a team, good equipment usage, and time management. These were all commonly expressed and reinforced during my work at the Habash Lab, ALS Environmental, SGS Canada, and the Turetsky Lab. However, there are many other skills strengthened at each work place.Work at ALS and SGS has taught me to work in a fast-paced environment with motivation and cool-headiness. while maintaining high standards with minimal errors. Often, the days were extremely busy where I worked non-stop to get these hundreds and hundreds of samples prepared. By remaining focused, organized, and attentive, I managed it all, exceeding expectations. I maintained high levels of communication with my supervisors and worked well as a team, often leading my coworkers on appropriate workflow. Work at the Habash and Turetsky Lab has taught me many more complicated protocols and new research involving PCR, bacteria culturing, extractions, stable weighing, and more. With a great lab and research foundation, I was able to learn everything extremely fast and can bring these skills anywhere. I find great joy in finding data and research on never done topics before which I was able to in these labs.Overall, my character as a hard and dedicated worker has resulted in high standards and great production turnout for the places I have worked. I am always striving to be a better worker and I find pride in that.
