As a member of the Striper Success Team, I provided first-line support to help troubleshoot technical issues with Skip-timer hardware and software. I utilized Asana to track cases and orders, and proprietary software to modify and design skip-timing systems. As the Secretary and Treasurer of SMART-Transportation Division Local 0473, I was responsible for managing the finances and ensuring that the union's bookkeeping met the standards of the National Union. I was elected to this position twice and served until I left the railroad industry. During my time in this role, I was able to keep the union financially stable, with a minimum balance of $30,000, and even grew the funds despite declining membership. This was achieved through strict bookkeeping standards and careful management of reimbursements.In addition to my financial responsibilities, I also assisted with the running of elections, took meeting minutes, and helped with member recruitment. I was the primary point of contact for union members with questions about dues and short-term disability insurance. Through my work in this position, I gained a thorough understanding of railroad and union regulations, union agreements, and the politics of rural unions.This experience has continued to fuel my interest in labor issues and politics in general. As a Trainman for Union Pacific Railroad, I held positions as a Conductor and Locomotive Engineer. In these roles, I was responsible for moving freight while adhering to federal and business regulations. While I found my time with the railroad to be financially successful, I also witnessed the early stages of automation on trains, which motivated me to return to school to study a technical field.
