I teach GIS for Environmental Science (ENVI 520). In this course, I instruct graduate and undergraduate students the basics of using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online and provide customized classwork that focuses on GIS workflows that are typical of mapping work done by environmental professionals. Both vector- and raster-based GIS are covered in my course material. Emphasis is placed on the use of open geospatial data, including Lidar-derived digital elevation models, thematic land cover maps, and hydrography datasets. Students are taught how to create hydrologic flow lines from high-resolution elevation models, how to conduct an accuracy assessment of thematic data, and how to use multiple forms of vector data with geospatial analysis tools.

Major responsibilities included development geology in shale gas reservoirs, reservoir characterization, geophysical log interpretation, 2D and 3D seismic interpretation, petrophysics and geochemistry-based rock property mapping, sequence stratigraphy, and shale gas reservoir optimization. Created new stratigraphic models of Marcellus Shale and Hamilton Group sedimentary sequences that explain unconformities and variations in formation thickness and rock properties across New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. This led to new strategies for well placement within discrete Marcellus stratigraphic horizons, resulting in increased well performance and production. Drilled more than 120 successful shale gas wells valued at over $1B of capital investment.

The East End Food Co-Op (12,000+ active members) exists to enhance the physical and social health of the greater Pittsburgh community. As a director I helped govern and guide the Co-Op through established policies, by-laws, and member representation. I served as the chair of the Member Linkage Committee and was involved in organizing and facilitating meetings with member-owners. Board experience has given me invaluable business governance skills and interpersonal skills that are transferable to many other endeavors.

Led multidisciplinary project teams and managed more than $1.5M in project funds. Assisted Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) with research and development of a multispectral wildland fire detection system. Managed several land use/land cover mapping projects and numerous satellite/aerial imagery collections. Analyzed commercial and NASA satellite remote sensing data (e.g. QuickBird, Landsat, ASTER, MODIS, Hyperion) including data from a MODIS direct broadcast system, and created geospatially-enabled derivative products. Developed and managed Internet-deployable distribution technologies for geospatial data. Created education materials for local government GIS and remote sensing training.

Created, edited, attributed, analyzed and QA/QC’d GIS data. Developed GIS Strategic and Implementation plans for the U.S. Department of Defense. Completed Phase I field investigations for watershed restoration and management projects. Processed and analyzed remotely sensed satellite imagery, aerial orthophotography, and digital elevation models (DEM), and developed derivative products for GIS use. Planned and managed remote sensing imagery collections and developed customized geospatial technology applications for projects in civic planning and watershed management.

Prepared and analyzed satellite data for volcanic cloud analysis (aerosols and sulfur dioxide). Researched the remote sensing of active volcanism, atmospheric circulation, and the impact of volcanic clouds on aircraft. Supervised by Dr. William I. Rose.

Searched and cataloged NASA TOMS and AVHRR imagery archives for previously undocumented volcanic eruptions, and analyzed these data for volcanic ash and sulfur dioxide content. Tested radiative transfer algorithms for volcanic cloud detection in AVHRR and TOMS satellite data. Supervised by Dr. Arlin Krueger (ret.) in the Atmospheric Chemistry and Dynamics Branch (Code 916).

Collected and cataloged volcanic ash samples and assisted AVO staff with integration of real-time satellite data into a public Internet site. Supervised by Dr. Terry Keith (ret.).
