RNA interference Discovery and Product Support research

Understanding of effects on endogenous plant gene expression and small RNA biogenesis utilizing viral suppressors of plant RNAi silencing to.In collaboration with the Weigel lab, we identified the jaw miRNA (miR319) that regulates leaf shape. This was the first example connecting a miRNA in plants to a specific developmental pathway. Identified a novel mechanism to generate regulatory small RNAs called trans-acting siRNAs that require a miRNA cleavage event to initiate phased siRNA production. A patent application was file on this technology (11/495,951).

Determined elements in the Barley yellow dwarf virus 3' translation enhancer (BYDV 3'TE) required for function.Screened and identified interacting endogenous plant proteins that bind to the BYDV 3'TE.
