  • Uc Davis Health
    Director, Technology
Uc Davis Health Aug 2023 - Feb 2024
    Sacramento, Ca, Us
Over my six months at the UC Davis Health CoLab, an entity focused on IT innovation in healthcare, I played a pivotal role in steering the product development team. My goal was to streamline product delivery and enhance the software development life cycle, tasks critical to our mission of delivering innovative solutions to the health system. One of my first initiatives was leading the delivery of a solution aimed at improving patient outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention procedures. By leveraging two-way SMS communications and consumer health devices, we introduced a novel approach to post-procedure care. This solution is currently demonstrating potential to surpass existing post-procedure standards in an ongoing cardiology clinical research study. In the domain of artificial intelligence, I initiated and guided the creation of an AI sandbox roadmap. This proposed platform will facilitate learning and experimentation for faculty, staff, and students by integrating synthetic health data with public healthcare datasets and the latest AI technologies from AWS and Databricks. Through direct engagement with target users and strategic demonstrations, I developed a product roadmap that responded to real needs, leading to the formation of a beta user group to further refine direction.Another key project under my leadership focused on addressing the lengthy wait times for colonoscopy appointments in Gastrointestinal clinics. By implementing a pilot solution that offered Cologuard, a home-based screening kit, to low-risk patients, we effectively reduced referral queues and wait times. I oversaw the project from its inception, working closely with GI physicians to test and refine our approach.Throughout my tenure at the CoLab, my efforts were geared towards improving the integrity and efficiency of our product development process. This experience has equipped me with valuable insights and skills that I am eager to apply in future challenges in the healthcare.
  • Center For Digital Health Innovation At Ucsf
Director, Technology, Ucsf Center For Digital Health Innovation / Principal Architect
Center For Digital Health Innovation At Ucsf Apr 2013 - Jul 2023
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
The UCSF Center for Digital Health Innovation (CDHI) was launched to bring together audacious digital health ideas with UCSF's healthcare acumen to drive healthcare forward. As a founding team member, I had a key role in creating our digital health strategy.Initially, we collaborated with the private sector, from startups to big tech, to implement new health solutions. As lead architect, I led assessments of the technologies and interoperability of multiple digital health tools while my physician colleagues assessed effectiveness, quality, and usability. We learned interoperability was a massive hurdle in digital health, and I co-authored a white paper on healthcare data interoperability challenges. This led to a significant partnership with Cisco to co-develop a connected health interoperability platform called Healthstack, that allowed apps to launch from the EHR and use API's to exchange data.Simultaneously, HL7 had released the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource (FHIR) draft standard. I co-authored advocacy letters to the ONC to adopt FHIR and subsequently joined the ONC FHIR-at-Scale Taskforce (FAST) to improve adoption.Utilizing Healthstack, I led teams that designed and built apps to improve patient access, like Refs & Docs, which used ML to process faxes, and Patient Connect to reduce scheduling turnaround times, all part of our Digital Patient Experience (DPE) program. I expanded the team from three to thirty and implemented Agile/Scrum, DevOps, and automated testing for faster delivery. For DPE, I devised a multi-year technology strategy to address capability gaps and led the Enterprise Architecture Review Board (EARB) to manage IT expenses and maintain enterprise standards. We improved IT governance based on our experiences, and I helped create committees for guidelines on healthcare APIs usage and AI/ML integration into clinical settings, to help lead to a new era of safe, secure, and rational use of emerging technologies.

It is committed to training future healthcare leaders, fostering innovative research, and delivering top-tier clinical services. It distinguishes itself with a strong commitment to community service, social justice, and advancements in health technology.Within SOM the Information Services Unit’s (ISU) role was to support the school's administration and provide guidance on IT strategy to the leadership, faculty, and staff. I came to ISU to lead the application development and analytics team, which supported a portfolio of 90+ applications, mostly home grown, that served the education, research, and administration of the school. Later in my tenure, we added applications that encompassed aspects of patient care.I was promoted to Director, overseeing a cross-functional team of 25+ with a $5M annual operating budget. I also oversaw the management of the School of Medicine Technology Transformation Grant. The aim was to help identify and provide funding for transformative technology projects that could potentially benefit SOM. We brought improvements across research, education, and clinical sectors. Through careful planning, we strived to enhance service delivery in all these areas, navigating the complexities of each field.During my tenure, I led the adoption in the use of innovative SaaS platforms, including Service-now.com and Salesforce.com. I also led the adoption of our enterprise API management platform, Mulesoft Anypoint. All three systems are still in use and were crucial in improving our operational capabilities across UCSF, aiding us in our quest for digital transformation. It was during this time, with several SOM clinical faculty I co-invented multiple innovative digital health solutions that paved the way for the creation of the Center for Digital Health Innovation.
