An engineering leader with an engineer's soul, lucky enough to be building and empowering incredible teams that are bringing AI to healthcare. I believe the real magic of AI is in its delivery and its impact, not in its academic impressiveness. I help start-ups find product-market fit, scale the tech, scale the teams, and build a sustainable culture where every person feels empowered and ready to change the world. I've grown teams 10x, companies 10x, valuations 100x, daily users from 0 to 5M. I've launched new products, migrated legacy systems, architected high-volume real-time systems, spearheaded initiatives from technical to cultural, and worked with CEOs to bring their vision to life.Presenter at O'Reilly Conferences: OSCON, Fluent Conf, and Velocity Conf.

Co-Founder / DadMama Goblin Games May 2019 - PresentFor years, our sons would constantly create games together - just by talking, writing ideas in a sketchbook, or making prototypes with parts from other games and sheets of paper or cardboard. In the summer of 2019, when they were 11 and 9, we saw them working on a game that seemed like it had promise. We encouraged them to stick with it through the summer to see how far they could take it. In that moment our family's game company, Mama Goblin Games, was born. We all spent the summer break working and play-testing Slime Inc to take it from using borrowed Pandemic cubes on a pencil drawn board made of paper to a finalized product with an official set of instructions, professionally printed board and box, custom components, and balanced gameplay. At the end of that summer, we got to show Mama Goblin's first game at a local makers fair (MakerX Columbus) and have shown games at Origins Columbus since.https://www.mamagoblingames.com/Even before we really started designing board games, we had been programming together for years. We started by learning JavaScript and Scratch, and have since moved on to GameMaker Studio 2, Unity, and Unreal Engine. Our first GitHub GameOff was a great experience for us. The kids built a game called "Feature: It's Not a Bug" - and I basically played project manager and devops. Our game placed in the top 15 out of 527 for the theme interpretation, innovation, and gameplay categories! And we placed 43 overall.https://www.mamagoblingames.com/video-games/feature -
Vp Of EngineeringOlive Mar 2021 - Jul 2022Columbus, Oh, UsAfter building out the robot operations teams and products as a Director of Engineering, I transitioned to lead a few engineers to start a new product: Olive's first product that extended outside of our AI-powered automations, called Olive Helps, which delivered $2M in value for our very first customer at launch. Olive Helps started as a desktop assistant for healthcare being built by 3 engineers and over the next 1.5 years, I grew this group to 50 engineers as we built the first fully context-aware desktop assistant for healthcare. This was more than just an assistant that was aware of what you were doing in any application so it could help at the right time - it was an entire platform and ecosystem. We created an SDK and developer tools that were used by Olive and over 50 third parties including start-ups like Ribbon Health and Syllable AI, health systems like The Ohio State University Medical Center, and well-known companies like ASUS who were using our SDK to build a Helps app that could process doctors notes using NLP and ML to automatically select billing codes for a claim. The apps/intelligences built using the SDK could be submitted to our marketplace and purchased touch-free by users of Olive Helps. This platform handled automatic updates of the assistant and the installed apps, access management and distribution within an organization, transactions and billing, review processes, security and data transparency, self-serve OAuth/SAML/ActiveDirectory configuration, usage tracking, monetization, touch-free developer signup, and developer payouts. This was an end-to-end platform that enabled any developer across the country to bring AI-enabled healthcare solutions to real health systems through an open marketplace. -
Director Of EngineeringOlive Aug 2018 - Mar 2021Columbus, Oh, UsAs we pivoted from the many CrossChx products to Olive, I was responsible for a team of 20 engineers who built the systems that eventually powered the operation of tens of thousands of AI Workers across hundreds of health systems, generating hundreds of millions of dollars in value for those health systems. From the beginning, we believed we could deliver value sooner if a health system could simply "hire Olive (the bot)" instead of dealing with slow and ineffective "standard integrations". Just give her an account like you would any other employee and we'd take care of the rest. To deliver on this promise, two things needed to come together: the ability for Olive to interact with the digital world like a human would and orchestrating taking those actions consistently and safely. My teams were tasked with the latter. We built everything that allowed us to discover and quantify automation opportunities, made the bots log into their workstations, deliver the bot runtimes and their AI, monitor performance, predict failures, manage credentials, manage compute across our cloud and on-prem VMs, troubleshoot and audit issues, support real-time event stream processing, support large-scale data exploration, and much more. A small, but fun product we built was software that could record a person's actions on their computer as they described what they are doing. This would produce a video recording including a timeline annotated with every action they took (button clicked, application focused, hot key pressed, etc) along with a full searchable transcript, auto-annotated notes for whenever someone said something like "hey Olive, remember that when searching for patients of Dr. Smith, always select the North location", and even the sentiment of the presenter at each moment. It even went as far as allowing you to compose an automation, simply by selecting the person's actions from the timeline. -
Senior Software Engineer / Engineering ManagerOlive Aug 2015 - Jul 2018Columbus, Oh, UsCrossChx ConnectLed the effort to build our mobile app that allows patients to connect to their doctor, dentist, or anyone in their care network eliminating the need to fill out paper forms. We took this from ideation and experimentation to implementing and delivering the iOS and Android app. Once the initial version of the app was released, I transitioned into leading a team of 13 engineers (mobile, web UI, and API) that continued to add to the offerings of the patient facing mobile app and the care provider facing web application. Within the first few weeks of launching, we reached #1 new health app with over 30,000 users. This app included secure QR code check-in for appointments, pre-visit document completion, insurance card storing and sharing, form e-signing, family care management, and the ability to share your full medical record and profile with any doctor instantly.CareminerTurned medical records and steaming hl7 feeds into a real time healthcare knowledge graph. Here are some examples of things you could do within the application:create insight into doctors who over prescribe compared to their peersfind instances of identity theft used to gain access to opioidsdiscover new relationships between different diagnosis, symptoms, treatmentsunderstand drivers of readmissionsbuild cohorts of eligible patients for clinical trialsanalyze socioeconomic impacts on quality of care, diseases, prescribing patterns, and coverageIn this almost 3 year span, we worked on several other products that were used by registrars, administrators, and other healthcare workers. -
Lead Software EngineerManta Nov 2013 - Aug 2015Lehi, Utah, UsI recently had the opportunity to step back into the lead software engineer role when we decided to take on rewriting our entire platform. It has been great to be able to lead at a hands-on level while still being involved in all the technical direction decision making. I am currently focusing on frontend engineering using AngularJS, Twitter Bootstap, and NodeJS/Express. -
Manager, Software EngineeringManta Feb 2012 - Nov 2013Lehi, Utah, UsManager / Leader----I lead a team of 7 front-end and back-end engineers who develop sections of the public facing manta.com website being seen by millions of users a day, deploying several times a day. I've helped us adopt agile development - refining the process, tools, and workflow. I'm spearheading several long needed initiatives within the engineering department focused on creating an environment where excellent engineers can grow and thrive - to increase engagement, creativity, ownership, and productivity. Software Architect / Senior Software Engineer----I also serve as an architect, defining both strategic and tactical technical direction and goals. I evaluate and pursue new technologies, design the next generation of our service orient architecture (SOA) platform, and drive improvements necessary for doubling traffic year after year and constantly adding new features. -
Lead Software Engineer - ApplicationsManta Jun 2011 - Feb 2012Lehi, Utah, UsI used my skills to leverage our growing development team to create scalable, maintainable, solutions that power the largest free source of information on small businesses. (see Manager position above for more details - there is a lot of overlap) -
DeveloperManta Jan 2005 - Jun 2011Lehi, Utah, UsAs the primary developer since the start, I played a large roll in growing Manta to more than 20 million monthly visitors. I spent most of my time designing and implementing web applications for Manta, but I also spent a lot of time guiding junior developers, holding code reviews, investigating new technologies, and extracting business requirements. I worked in a team of 10 developers and we tended to lean toward Agile Development. I often worked directly with the other departments (business, SEO, advertising, marketing, analytics, and infrastructure) and coalesced their desires into solid requirements and eventually a tangible product. I worked on everything from data processing and index building to front end UI work. -
Web Developer - InternManta Jun 2004 - Jan 2006Lehi, Utah, UsI worked as a developer intern, implementing new features and resolving bugs in websites for 40+ large publishers like Standard & Poor's, Thomson Gale (Cengage), and McGraw-Hill.
