Leading energy strategy for new large developments

Promoted and supported integration of sustainability into policy, strategy and delivery,. I built up a team from 4 to 12 staff, mostly through attracting external funding. I led local policy and strategy development, and integration of environmental sustainability across the breadth of council activity. Achievements included:• Wrote and managed the implementation of the first local planning policies in the country to require BREEAM/EcoHomes Excellent standard and sustainable energy systems in major developments 2006• Key player in the promotional activities and lobbying which ensured national government approval of these policies. As a result, they were referred to in national planning legislation and guidance.• Set up and drove the corporate environmental management system, including establishing environmental KPIs and monitoring systems, and chairing cross-departmental governance groups• Enhanced in-house recycling systems, energy and water saving measures• Attracted external funding, then managed a marketing programme which quadrupled the rate of home insulation in Croydon• Set up and managed the use of an internal loan fund to install energy saving technologies in Council properties.• Established a new environmental support network (ENVIBE) for local businesses, helping 500+ companies save through environmental improvements • Improved Croydon’s environmental procurement policy and its implementation• Won the London Mayor’s Environmental Procurement Awards 2005 ‘Best Public Sector Organisation’In the course of my work at Croydon, I presented frequently at conferences in the UK and Europe. My work on ‘sustainability in planning policy’ attracted most attention, and I also presented on tackling fuel poverty, sustainable development strategy, environmental management, and education for sustainable development. I contributed articles for environmental magazines on the integration of sustainable development into local government regulation.
