Woebot is a mental health app that uses cognitive behavioral therapy principles to help users through tough times. As a writer, I tinkered around in Woebot's brain and wrote interactive content to help it explain difficult concepts, be empathetic and responsive and entertaining, and provide useful tools for improving users' mental health.
After years of begging everyone I know to start a podcast with me, I finally got a yes. My co-host (a famous marine biologist) and I (a non-famous writer) pick the most boring, complex science topics we can think of and try to make them interesting and cool. Tons of research is involved, and I do all the cutting and editing in Adobe Audition.
I conceived, wrote, and designed interactive conversations and UX copy – from initial concept to final execution – to help employees better manage their health and finances. I led a motley crew of cross-functional geniuses, managed client relationships, and kept business goals and user experience front of mind simultaneously. I hired and directed voice talent, and recorded and edited in Logic. Additionally, I wrote and produced short videos and marketing materials, managed the writing team, and helped the entire organization write better.
Picture a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' website that gets you excited about health insurance – we call them ‘interactive conversations.’ I researched each topic, wrote complex flowcharts and audio scripts, hired and directed voice talent, wrangled a creative team, and managed client expectations to produce interactive Flash and HTML5-based extravaganzas. My project on Medicare won an award from the Center for Plain Language for, no joke, its “vibrant and interesting storyline.”

Taking a cue from my wildly successful short fiction editorial career, I decided to have a go at podcasting. My co-host and I produced episodes that explained a different stressful topic every week for the worried, unwashed masses. We were featured on the AV Club (thrice!), Mental Floss, and BoingBoing, and had nearly 2000 subscribers, most of whom were not our moms.
The Internet
As Dustin Hoffman’s family friend advised him in The Graduate: “One word: plastics.” Taking this advice to heart, I started my own highly-lucrative venture in short story publishing. It turned out, though, that there was more to be gained than just the inevitable fame and fortune – I learned how to manage a website, write and edit web copy, reject other people’s hard work with firm kindness, and act humble when the mega-blog BoingBoing featured the magazine on their site. I also learned to use newfangled tools such as “Twitter” and “Facebook” for publicity purposes. The magazine was well-respected and popular, and after three wildly successful years, I decided to retire and buy a second home in Cabo on my earnings.

Believe it or not, the internet is chock-full of misinformation about sex. I took it as my personal mission to offer clear, truthful, and funny information to the sex toy-buying public, both in-store and via our website. I wrote countless advice columns, product descriptions, pop-science analyses, and more. I was also in charge of organizing events and workshops, writing press releases, managing social media accounts, and updating the aforementioned website using my basic HTML and Wordpress-editing skills.
